What are the responsibilities and job description for the Preschool Lead Teacher position at Parkview Christian Preschool?
Parkview Christian Preschool is a ministry of Parkview Church in Iowa City, which exists to glorify God through the whole church forming whole disciples of Jesus for the good of all people. Our Lead Teachers are the heart of that mission in the classroom — guiding children ages 3–5 through a play-based curriculum that nurtures their curiosity, builds their character, and grounds them in the love of God.
Role Summary
The Lead Teacher collaborates with skilled teachers to plan and execute a developmentally appropriate, theme-based curriculum for mixed-age classrooms of 3–5 year olds. This is a part-time, weekday morning position that includes school-year preparation, training, conference days, and year-end wrap-up responsibilities.
This position would require a teaching schedule in either our Monday, Wednesday, Friday program, or our Tuesday, Thursday program.
Primary Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction & Curriculum
--Collaborate with teaching staff to plan and execute a developmentally appropriate, theme-based curriculum that integrates Heggerty phonemic awareness and other evidence-based practices. Lesson planning for the school year is divided amongst the Lead Teaching team.
--Actively engage children in learning activities (including structured and unstructured play), tailoring instruction to each child’s unique developmental progression.
--Encourage each child’s faith development throughout the school day.
--Maintain developmentally appropriate approaches to social-emotional development, including kindergarten readiness skills.
--Comply with all DHS regulations to ensure a safe, nurturing classroom environment.
--Lead a team of assistant teachers to maintain a well-managed and warm classroom environment.
--Provide clear direction and support to assistant teachers in daily classroom routines.
Family Communication & Assessment
--Regularly assess children’s progress in alignment with the Iowa Early Learning Standards.
--Communicate clearly and consistently with parents about their child’s development, celebrating growth and addressing concerns with warmth and honesty.
--Meet with preschool families during conference days and as needed throughout the year.
Professional Growth
--Participate in staff training, professional development days, and team meetings as scheduled, maintaining compliance with HHS regulations for continuing education.
--Pursue ongoing growth in early childhood education, Christ-centered teaching practices, and classroom skills.
Requirements
--Experience providing primary instruction or child care in a preschool or early childhood setting
--A degree in Early Childhood Education or general Education is highly preferred
--Possession of an Iowa Teaching License is highly preferred.
--Expertise in instructional techniques appropriate for 3–5 year olds in mixed-age classroom settings
--A servant heart toward families of all backgrounds and abilities
--Must pass all Iowa-mandated criminal and child abuse background checks

--A genuine desire to see Christ more fully formed in the next generation
--Passion for early childhood education and mastery of age-appropriate instructional methods
--Clear verbal and written communication with children, families, staff, and prospective families
--Ability to manage and lead a small group classroom environment with patience and creativity
--Strong time management and problem-solving skills
--Proficiency with basic office software and educational technology tools
