Traffic Control Flagger
Responsible for directing and controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic through active construction work zones. Maintains safe traffic flow using approved traffic-control devices and hand signals, coordinates with fellow flaggers and construction crews, assists with lane closures and temporary traffic patterns, and monitors work-zone conditions to protect workers and the traveling public. Sets up and maintains cones, barricades, signs, and other traffic-control devices while complying with project traffic-control plans and applicable safety requirements.
Traffic Control Flagger — Typical Job Duties
- Direct and control vehicle traffic using STOP/SLOW paddles, hand signals, and other approved devices.
- Maintain safe traffic flow through construction and roadway work zones.
- Stop traffic when construction activities, equipment, or workers require roadway access.
- Release traffic when it is safe to proceed.
- Coordinate with other flaggers to maintain proper spacing and communication.
- Watch for approaching vehicles, pedestrians, and potential hazards.
- Communicate with equipment operators and construction crews regarding traffic conditions.
- Assist with lane closures, alternating one-way traffic, detours, and temporary traffic patterns.
- Set up, maintain, and remove cones, drums, barricades, signs, and other temporary traffic-control devices as directed.
- Keep work-zone entrances and travel lanes clear of unauthorized vehicles.
- Monitor traffic-control devices and report damaged, missing, or improperly positioned equipment.
- Maintain awareness of changing roadway and weather conditions.
- Follow the project's Traffic Control Plan (TCP) and applicable safety requirements.
- Wear required high-visibility PPE and other personal protective equipment.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, or incidents to the supervisor.
- Assist construction personnel with maintaining a safe separation between workers, equipment, and public traffic.
- Perform other work-zone safety duties as assigned.
