Maintenance Mechanic

General Statement of Duties

This non-exempt position is responsible for the mechanical operation, repair, maintenance and preventative maintenance of the District’s water and wastewater equipment and facilities. Assists in new mechanical installations at District facilities.  

Supervision Received

Works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor and under the general directions of the Maintenance Superintendent.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled maintenance duties on District water and wastewater facilities and equipment.  Duties include, but not limited to, replacing filters in various systems; setting operational parameters; repairing or rebuilding pumps, HVAC units, air compressors, chemical systems and valves.

• Maintains equipment, maintenance files, parts inventory and procurement, forecasting reports and reports on completed work orders.   

• Operates construction, maintenance, heavy equipment and other mechanized equipment and hand tools to complete tasks such as repairing underground valves and pipes and the placement of pumps and valves in system. 

• Document work in Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), including updating, opening and closing work orders.

• May assist with reviewing submittals, providing recommendations for capital projects, and participating in regular progress meetings.

• Performs routine and non-routine inspections of equipment.

• Maintains equipment records using the maintenance software program.  Performs data entry and programming and develops and modifies preventative maintenance schedules to optimize operational time and minimize down time. 

• Handles hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals during repair operations, delivery, storage and use.

• Specifies and sources mechanical equipment.  Maintains mechanical supply inventory and records.

• Routinely performs physical cleanup and housekeeping of work areas, equipment and buildings using standard cleaning equipment and materials.

• Attends technical and safety training meetings, courses and seminars as required.

• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Working knowledge of industrial maintenance and repair activities.  Basic operating skill of heavy equipment such as forklifts, and cranes. 

• Basic knowledge of preventative maintenance, inspections, servicing and repair of equipment and machinery.

• Working knowledge of the principles of pump hydraulics and the mechanics of machinery.

• Working knowledge of safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment and ability to apply safety principles on all job tasks.  Ability to anticipate unsafe circumstances; act accordingly to prevent accidents and promptly report accidents and hazardous conditions.

• Basic computer knowledge including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Basic knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and SCADA systems.

• Ability to recognize, diagnose, identify and repair faulty operational functions of water and wastewater equipment. 

• Ability to focus attention on tasks, which may be complex, routine or repetitive without losing concentration or becoming distracted by external activities.  Ability to adapt to interruptions, equipment failures, unusual demands or changing priorities.

• Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals, diagrams and drawings.

• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures.

• Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written format.

• Ability to work effectively with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, vendors, and deal tactfully with the public.

• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools. 

Qualifications/Experience

• One year of diversified experience in the maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair and operation of industrial and process equipment.

• Must have a Motor Vehicle Record within the Acceptable or no less than Borderline rating according to the Vehicle Policy.

Working Conditions/Physical Activities

• This position offers a standard 40-hour work week with flexible shift options, including: Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts per week.

• Will be on rotating emergency on-call duty in addition to the regular workweek.  May be subject to mandatory overtime on an as needed basis to work within the department and for other duties as assigned.

• This position is designated Essential Personnel per the Emergency Response Plan during a severe winter weather warning or event.

• Perform strenuous physical labor and stand for an extended period of time.

• Work in a wastewater plant where elevated levels of noise, irritants, dust, dirt, bacteria, hazardous chemicals/air/materials and fumes are always present.  May come into contact with raw wastewater.  The Hepatitis A & B, and tetanus w/Diphtheria vaccine is strongly recommended and is offered at no cost by the District.

• Work may take place outside in all weather conditions.  May be exposed to risks typically associated with working around water, chemicals, electricity and other man-made and natural hazards.    The use of a respirator may be required for some tasks.  Occasionally work in confined spaces.

• Lifting and handling objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and or up to 20 pounds frequently.

• Full range body movements required including stooping, twisting, kneeling, bending, leaning, reaching, climbing (heights), stretching and working in awkward positions.

• Vision is needed for driving, operating equipment, reading, recording and interpreting information; speech and hearing are used to communicate with others over phone and in person.
