Overview:
The Skate Instructor is a Part-Time Position. We offer competitive compensation, PTO and an employee discount for part-time employees.
Job Purpose:
Under the direction of the Figure Skating Coordinator, the position of Figure Skating Instructor acts as a role model for participants and is responsible for providing instruction, direction, and safety to students in the figure skating program. This position is also responsible assisting with other ice rink functions and special events.
Essential Functions:
- Understand and embrace the structure of the Skate Academy.
- Represent the program, ice rink and Park District in a positive, respectful manner.
- Follow lesson plans provided by the Skate Academy teaching high quality technique.
- Use terminology for skill work as described by the program to reinforce consistency between classes and coaches.
- Attend all pre-season and in-service training sessions.
- Adhere to the policies, procedures and expectations set forth by the program and Park District including (but not limited to), class start and end times, attendance requirements, and paperwork requirements.
- Become familiar with participants and parents; know their names, personalities, skills, and interests.
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately.
- Keep program supplies, equipment, and facility space clean, organized, and safe.
- Distribute all flyers, promotional materials, and handouts as assigned.
- Follow all Skate Academy appearance guidelines.
Additional Functions:
- Assist with additional events and tasks as needed.
- Promote teamwork and safety among coaches and participants.
- Bring all concerns and problems to the Figure Skating Coordinator.
- Know all emergency action plans and execute plans properly as needed.
Knowledge, Skill and Work Experience Required:
- CER-C certification from Professional Skaters Association (obtain with three months of hire).
- Ability to work within program time frames.
- Enthusiasm towards various age and skill ranges.
- Ability to verbally communicate and physically demonstrate instructions and skills to students.
- Exhibit willingness to accept and apply feedback.
- Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.
Recommended:
- Previously figure skating coaching experience
- USFSA membership
- High School Diploma
Work Environment, Physical Demands and Considerations:
- Frequently sitting, walking, standing, skating and typing
- Occasionally climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling
- Exposure to cold weather when in the ice rink.
- Exposure to quick changes in temperature between rink and lobby areas.
- Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise verbal and written manner.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to communicate with staff and participants in clear, concise manner.
- Ability to handle questions, complaints and concerns from staff and public in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
