Job Summary:  Under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Dance Instructor is responsible for providing an engaging and comprehensive dance experience and instruction to participants of various ages and skill levels. The role involves designing, planning, and executing dance classes aligning with program and district objectives catering to participants' diverse needs. The Dance Instructor is responsible for creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, promoting creativity and physical fitness through dance, in addition to planning and implementing the annual spring dance recital.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement age-appropriate dance curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Ability to teach various styles from beginner to advanced skill levels.
  • Frequently move about and position ones’ self as in dance instruction.
  • Develop choreography, select music, and assist at the annual dance recital.
  • Maintain accurate records such as attendance, participant progress, incident reports, etc.
  • Responsible for evaluating participants’ progress and performance regularly to help them improve their skills and confidence. 
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of participants during classes and performances.
  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Attend training and staff meetings.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment. Report supply and equipment needs to Recreation Supervisor.
  • Provide high level customer service to participants, parents, etc.
  • Communicate with participants and parents.
  • Assist in marketing and promoting the dance program.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Any other related duties assigned by the Recreation Supervisor.


PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

The Dance Instructor may feel pressure from the responsibility of effective and efficient delivery of services, the need to resolve situations with participants, parents and co-workers, and the needs of patrons who are in need of special accommodations. Stress may develop from multi-tasking and assistance needed by patrons and parents.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Dance Instructors will be exposed to many activities that may require, including but not limited to, prolonged sitting, kneeling, bending, squatting, walking, reaching, and lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds without assistance.  

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS

  1. Must be able to work independently.
  2. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing, following directions, and read English.
  3. Must possess time management and organizational skills to effectively perform responsibilities.
  4. Must possess good problem-solving skills and have the capability to act rationally and calmly in emergency situations.
  5. Must be able to represent the Park District of La Grange in a courteous and professional manner.
  6. Must be able to make judgments with respect to confidentiality of information and problem solving.
  7. Must exhibit good safety awareness and judgment in all aspects of the position.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:  Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of two years of experience instructing dance programs, with a proficiency in multiple dance styles and a strong foundation of technique and performance. Applicant must have reliable transportation and ability to provide a current CPR/AED/First Aid certification upon hire or receive within 90 days of hire. Must be a mandated reporter for the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act
