Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Serve as a Driver Trainer to Transportation Officers; as needed, assist other subsidiaries in training CDL staff
  • Organize and conduct training sessions covering specified areas as it pertains to securing a commercial driver’s license, on-the-job training, refresher training, promotional development, upgrading and retraining
  • Formulate teaching outline and determine instructional methods such as individual training, group instruction, lectures, demonstrations, conferences, meetings and workshops
  • Select or develop teaching aids such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials and reference work; make recommendations on the selection of technical equipment and supplies
  • Develop testing and evaluation procedures to research and evaluate the effectiveness of the training program; revise training curriculum and methods to improve effectiveness
  • Participate in needs analysis studies to determine training needs
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures, educational resources and academic libraries
  • Maintain records, rosters, reports, and other material essential to education & training programs, including reports on student progress
  • Attend required training sessions to maintain required level of proficiency and required certifications
  • Drive assigned vehicles in conformance with all applicable laws, PPS/BSNC policy and procedures and safety guidelines
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and operational readiness testing; identify problems with vehicles, including problems that require vehicles to be placed out of service; ensure that identified problems with vehicles are addressed and corrected
  • Attend meetings and conferences as directed
  • Perform other related duties as required

Required (Minimum Necessary) Qualifications

· Education Requirements: High School Diploma/GED

· Level of Experience Requirements: Class B CDL License (minimum 3 years)

· Possession of a USDOT Medical Card

· Certification as a CDL Driving Instructor

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

· Strong and effective written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to effectively prepare clear and concise reports and documentation of events and incidents, as well as effective public speaking skills

· Strong computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite programs such as, WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint

· Ability to effectively document actions, and establish and maintain appropriate records using computer systems and manual records

· Ability to effectively organize work, determine priorities, make decisions and complete assigned duties in a timely manner with minimum supervision and guidelines

· Ability to provide clear direction, manage individuals and groups of individuals in a professional manner

· Ability to accurately administer assessment tools (academic) and to analyze, track and compile reports on resulting data

· Ability to demonstrate creativity and originality in designing and implementing programs

· Ability to effectively conduct individual and/or group education activities

This position does perform DOT “safety-sensitive” functions (as defined under 49 CFR Part 40) and is subject to all federal requirements related to Department of Transportation requirements for those performing, or on-call to perform, “safety-sensitive” functions. Employees must provide a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC).

Work Environment

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The job is performed in an office setting, as well as outside in transport vehicles. Job sites may be outdoors, or indoors. While conducting vehicle training, the individual may be exposed to: extreme cold or hot weather conditions, hazardous noise, fall hazards, live traffic, fumes, or airborne particles. Occasional travel may be required.
