The Role: Panamint Capital is seeking two exceptional candidates with 1-5 years of professional experience in energy or commodity investment, credit, special situations or capital markets to join our Investment team in Analyst and/or Associate roles. Recent graduates with strong analytical skills and a demonstrated interest in energy markets may also apply.
This is an operationally focused investment role with a wide range of responsibilities. In addition to traditional energy investment activities, you will work alongside our Asset Management, Development and Financial Services teams to optimize our operating fleet, create new assets and deliver market leading results for our investors. You will also support the firm’s executives and Investor Relations professionals with capital formation, investor engagement and strategic initiatives.
In this role you will lead or support the following responsibilities:
Investment Strategy & Origination
- Researching and analyzing market fundamentals covering supply and demand, forward power, natural gas and coal; basis, capacity and ancillary service revenues, congestion and PPA and toll economics.
- Tracking FERC, ISO/RTO and state utility commission proceedings, integrated resource planning, interconnection and large load tariff reforms, trade and monetary policy, and market participant behavior.
- Synthesizing this information into investment ideas and identifying opportunities where the firm can express those ideas by employing its differentiated approach to energy investment.
Transaction Execution
- Managing asset acquisition and monetization, including modeling and valuation, due diligence, consultant and data room management, legal and financial structuring, definitive documentation and waterfall management.
- Supporting the Development team post-close to execute new asset creation activities including technology selection, interconnection strategy and advancing the firm’s position in regulatory settings.
Commercialization & Risk Management
- Creating and implementing commercial strategies to manage commodity risk utilizing power purchase agreements, financial and physical power and natural gas hedging, and large load-specific offtake products.
- Partnering with strategic counterparties and key market participants to expand the scale of opportunities the firm can pursue.
Capital Markets
- Raising project finance, tax equity and other forms of structured capital.
- Developing and managing relationships with third-party capital sources.
Portfolio Management
- Owning the underlying investment case and working with our Asset Management and Financial Services teams to collaboratively manage asset performance and pursue optimization initiatives.
- Negotiating major contracts such as equipment procurement, fuel transport and long-term service agreements.
The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate is an unconventional, analytical thinker with a relentless desire to create value by investing in energy assets. You have a B.A./B.S. from a leading school and robust financial modeling and structuring capabilities. We look for candidates with differentiated skills such as programming or geospatial analysis. You cogently express yourself using quantitative and qualitative methods and are well-versed in primary source research and data collection.
