About the Role:
The RN Day Surgery PRN plays a critical role in delivering high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing outpatient surgical procedures. This position focuses on providing comprehensive preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative nursing care to ensure patient safety, comfort, and optimal recovery. The nurse collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and respond promptly to any changes in patient condition. As a PRN (pro re nata) role, flexibility and adaptability are essential to meet fluctuating patient volumes and staffing needs. Ultimately, this role contributes to the efficient operation of the day surgery unit while maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence and patient-centered care.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support) PALS certifications required.
- One year of experience in perioperative or surgical nursing .
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed in a PRN capacity.
- Strong understanding of surgical asepsis and infection control protocols.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced certifications such as Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR).
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in surgical settings.
- Demonstrated skills in patient education and pain management techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough preoperative assessments including reviewing patient history, vital signs, and surgical consent to prepare patients for surgery.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of the surgical environment, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are sterile and available.
- Monitor patients closely during recovery, observing for any signs of complications or adverse reactions and intervening as necessary.
- Provide detailed postoperative education and discharge instructions to patients and their families to promote safe recovery at home.
- Document all nursing care activities accurately and timely in the patient’s medical record in compliance with regulatory standards.

The RN Day Surgery PRN utilizes clinical nursing skills daily to assess patient conditions, administer medications, and manage surgical care protocols effectively. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and providing clear instructions to patients and families. Critical thinking and quick decision-making abilities are applied to identify and respond to any intraoperative or postoperative complications promptly. Organizational skills help manage multiple patients and documentation requirements efficiently in a fast-paced surgical environment. Additionally, proficiency with electronic health records supports accurate and timely documentation, enhancing continuity of care and compliance with healthcare regulations.
Day shift. Work as needed when surgery census is high.
