As a Staff Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), you will play an essential role in supporting patient rehabilitation by providing hands-on therapy services under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, helping patients restore function, improve mobility, and enhance quality of life.
In this role, you will deliver physical therapy treatments in accordance with established plans of care, carrying out therapeutic exercises, modalities, and interventions as directed by the supervising Physical Therapist. You will work with patients across the lifespan—including pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations—ensuring care is appropriate to each individual’s needs and goals. You will monitor patient progress during treatment sessions, document outcomes accurately, and communicate effectively with the Physical Therapist regarding patient response and any concerns.
You will contribute to the daily operations of the rehabilitation department by assisting with program development, supporting departmental workflows, and maintaining a safe, efficient treatment environment. You may also support and guide rehabilitation aides or students during training experiences. Strong teamwork is essential, as you will collaborate with providers, therapists, and multidisciplinary team members to promote continuity of care and positive patient outcomes.
Professional standards are a key component of this role. You will practice in accordance with the Iowa Physical Therapy Practice Act and adhere to APTA standards and professional guidelines. You will maintain accurate and timely documentation in the medical record, demonstrate accountability in your work, and adapt to evolving healthcare practices, technologies, and patient needs.
It is important to note that while you will play an active role in delivering care, the Physical Therapist Assistant does not perform initial evaluations or re-evaluations, independently modify treatment plans, or discharge patients from therapy services.
To be successful in this role, candidates must have completed an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program and hold a current Iowa PTA license. Previous experience is preferred but not required. Strong interpersonal communication skills, critical thinking ability, and a commitment to professional growth are essential. Candidates should also be comfortable working with diverse patient populations, maintaining flexibility in scheduling, and using basic computer systems. A valid Iowa driver’s license is required, as the position may involve travel for patient care or support activities.
