Transportation Coordinator

Palmetto Railways, a growing Charleston based enterprise agency of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, is seeking a Transportation Coordinator to join our team. Palmetto Railways is dedicated to providing safe, efficient, and cost-effective rail solutions to facilitate the movement of freight and support economic development efforts; therefore, promoting the economic viability of the State of South Carolina.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Position reports to Managers of Transportation Operations. Candidate must work with customers to ensure the efficient movement of rail cars at Palmetto Railways. The ideal candidate will be safety-oriented, have a solid operations background, and will have the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Candidate properly documents these movements and reports them to connecting railroads, safely dispatches inbound and outbound trains on Palmetto Railways’ properties, prepares train orders and switch lists for all train crews daily, promptly and efficiently completes required reports for submission. Work hours may vary, including nights, weekends & holidays – subject to hours of service regulations.   

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Team player with a strong commitment to safety
• Knowledge of railroad operations
• Candidate must be detail oriented and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills 
• Knowledge, understanding, and compliance with the Safety and Operating Procedures and internal policies
• Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office programs
• Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment 
• Can walk long distances on uneven and rough terrain while making railroad yard
• Perform routine and specialized work 
• Must be able to don and doff PPE
• Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination is required
• May involve noise levels of an intensity that may require hearing protection 
• Perform all duties as required by the Managers of Transportation Operations and other management
• A high school diploma/GED
• Valid SC driver’s license required
• Must be able to qualify for a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensure that the SECURE vision is being upheld at all times
• Coordinate the movement of rail cars between Class I railroads and customers
• Create efficient work orders for train crews to satisfy customer service requirements
• Assist Managers of Transportation Operations with crew management
• Provide detailed and accurate job briefings to ensure the safe movement of trains and equipment on controlled and non-controlled track at all subdivisions
• Provide detailed and accurate reports to management team and customers
• Send and receive data to Class I railroads and customers via operating software and various customized reports
• Support and assist customers with expediting the movement of railcars both on and off-line
• Assist accounting department with customer billing
