Structural Steel / NDT Inspector

Job Summary

A Structural Steel/NDT Inspector at PPI is responsible for performing daily inspection of structural steel at construction projects and monitoring quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings and project specifications. Inspections include visual and physical inspection and field testing to verify conformance with plans and specifications. Inspectors are responsible for preparing inspection reports regarding observations and field testing of structural steel. Inspectors are responsible for communicating information to engineers/project managers and contractor/client representatives and must be capable of collaborating with the project team on solutions to potential issues.

Primary Responsibilities

• Conduct welding inspections at job sites and submit accurate reports in a timely fashion.
• Study and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and manuals to understand project requirements.
• Operate and maintain a motor vehicle, including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
• Partner with fabricators, engineers, and supervisors, to ensure project quality and completion per specifications.
• Communicate with dispatching and/or field supervisor, advising of current job status and locations as required.
• Track progress and discrepancies of current structural steel projects and notify project manager of any issues.
• Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to protect oneself and others in the work environment.
• Monitor welding activities on-site and in fabrication shops to ensure proper techniques and procedures are followed.
• Conduct non-destructive testing (NDT) such as dye penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic testing (if qualified).
• Document inspection results clearly and accurately, including photographs, inspection reports, and deficiency logs.
• Identify and report welding defects or non-conformities; verify corrective actions and rework as necessary.
• Participate in pre-construction and progress meetings to provide technical guidance related to welding and inspection.
• Interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and welding symbols to assess compliance and verify fabrication details.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, including AWS, ASME, AISC, and RCSC, and project-specific criteria.

Required Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver license with a clean driving record

Preferred Experience (Not Required)

• Additional NDT Level II certifications (PT, MT, UT,).
• Previous experience inspecting bridge, or heavy civil infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with quality management systems such as AISC Quality Certification Program.
• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I

• Ability to use a computer and smart phone, with a general knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and the ability to learn PPI specific programs
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, project site specifications, and procedure manuals

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in all seasons
• Ability to move, lift, or carry objects or materials up to 50 lbs. without assistance
• Body movements, in addition to manual lifting, include: bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing
• Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding
• Ability to physically maneuver construction sites and excavations

Other Requirements

• Travel to and from multiple jobsites each day in the southwest Missouri area is expected
• May be required to work extended and irregular hours to meet deadlines including overtime and occasional weekends
