Hall Monitor / Restroom Attendant

Job Goal:The Palmer Public Schools Hall Monitor/Bathroom Attendant is responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and welcoming school environment by monitoring hallways, common areas, and student restroom areas; supporting appropriate student behavior; assisting with the safe movement of students throughout the school; and promptly communicating concerns to appropriate school personnel. Salary:Commensurate with experience Work Year: 180 days Supervision: Reports to the Building Principal or designee Education, Work Experience, and Licensure: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous experience working with children or adolescents preferred. Experience in a school or youth-serving environment preferred. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents/guardians, and visitors. Must be trained, or willing to be trained, in the de-escalation and physical restraint techniques utilized by the District, as applicable. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student and school matters. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Monitor hallways, entrances, common areas, and other assigned areas to promote a safe, orderly, and respectful school environment. Monitor student restrooms and surrounding areas to ensure appropriate student behavior, cleanliness, and safety. Maintain a visible and professional presence in assigned areas. Monitor the movement of students between classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, and other school locations. Assist students with directions and provide appropriate reminders regarding school rules and expectations. Address minor student behavior concerns in accordance with school policies and procedures and refer more serious or continuing concerns to the appropriate administrator or staff member. Report unsafe conditions, vandalism, suspicious activity, maintenance concerns, or other issues promptly to the appropriate school personnel. Monitor student restroom use while maintaining student privacy and dignity. Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly environment by reporting spills, damage, supply needs, or sanitation concerns to appropriate personnel. Help maintain appropriate traffic flow in hallways and common areas during arrival, dismissal, passing periods, lunch, and other designated times. Assist with supervision of students during assigned school activities, transitions, and other duties as directed. Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established school emergency procedures. Communicate effectively with administrators, teachers, school personnel, students, and visitors. Maintain confidentiality concerning students, families, and school matters. Complete required logs, reports, or other documentation as directed. Assist in promoting a positive school climate and respectful interactions among students. Perform such other tasks as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent of Schools. ADA and Minimum Qualifications to Perform Essential Job Functions: Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to walk and stand for extended periods and move throughout the school building and grounds. Must be able to exert reasonable force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects as necessary to perform assigned duties. Must be able to respond appropriately to student and emergency situations. Data Conception: Requires the ability to observe and assess situations, identify potential safety or behavioral concerns, and determine the appropriate course of action in accordance with established procedures. Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and communicate effectively with students, staff, parents/guardians, and visitors. Includes giving instructions, directions, reminders, and assignments as appropriate. Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and understand school policies, procedures, schedules, emergency protocols, written instructions, and other related materials. Requires the ability to complete basic written reports, logs, and documentation. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense and sound judgment in routine and emergency situations; recognize potential problems; and follow established procedures and directives. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to receive and communicate information, explain procedures, give directions, and follow oral and written instructions. Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to move safely and efficiently throughout school buildings and grounds while monitoring students and assigned areas. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle routine equipment, supplies, doors, communication devices, and other materials necessary to perform assigned duties. Interpersonal: Requires the ability to work effectively with students and adults; remain calm and professional when confronted with challenging or stressful situations; and interact appropriately with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Physical Communication: Must be able to talk and hear effectively in order to communicate with students, staff, and visitors and to respond appropriately to safety and emergency situations. Must be able to communicate via telephone or other school communication systems.
