Base Salary
Classification: Salaried Staff/Exempt
Purpose: Oversee and supervise the entire music ministry, other choir/ music directors, and musicians of the church in cooperation with the Senior Pastor. Provide organ and piano accompaniment as required by the church.
Qualifications: Adept musicianship, proficiency in accompaniment, masterful hymnology, varied uses of organ registrations, knowledgeable ancillary techniques to enhance hymn singing, i.e. modulation, special effects, etc., diversity of organ repertoire, a cooperative spirit, dedication to the demands of the growing church and its Music Ministry. Possess a strong music education background, displays excellent musicianship, and has an extensive knowledge of church music literature/repertoire. Display keyboard knowledge for parts rehearsal accompaniments. Bachelor of
Arts, Music Education required.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Be involved in activities/ ministries of PCUMC through prayers, presence, spiritual gifts, and talents.
2. Provide prelude, offertory, and postlude for all regular and special worship services throughout the liturgical year.
3. Provide for at least two special presentations, i.e. Christmas, Lent, and other Concerts (i.e.
Chancel Choir, Voices of Faith, Handbells, etc.)
4. Serve as the principal person responsible for piano/organ accompaniment to the Chancel
Choir at rehearsals and worship services. Oversee and provide accompaniment for the
Contemporary Service.
5. Serve as accompanist for special solos, special services and for community performances.
6. Oversee/Direct the Handbell Choir, scheduling the Handbell Choir rehearsals as needed to ring monthly in worship, during Handbell season. (October-April).
7. Oversee the Children's Choir, work with other music staff/ volunteers to direct Children's
Choir, with rehearsals as needed to sing monthly in worship during the choir season, providing a supportive and open learning environment.
8. Oversee/Direct Voices of Faith Gospel Choir, with rehearsals as needed to sing monthly or quarterly.
9. Plays for weddings and funerals.
10. Meet with pastor/staff weekly for coordination of music program and worship services.
11. Attend regularly scheduled meetings with music ministry and worship committees.
12. Expand music library to include current compositions as well as traditional church music (i.e. broad geme of various types of church music literature which would be appropriate for the diversity of PCUMC's congregation).
13. Arrange special music (for other choirs, hand bells, duets, solos, etc.) for all services.
Work with musicians in planning and preparing such music, when necessary.
14. Recruit new choir members on an ongoing basis.
15. See that absentees are contacted and encourage attendance at rehearsals and services.
16.Annually attend one (1) continuing Education event or webinar in church music annually.
17. Appoint and supervise choir librarian(s) to arrange and file music.
18. Expand and coordinate music program as church membership expands.
19. Oversee maintenance for the organ and pianos at church.
20. Complete other duties as assigned.
Continuous Improvement:
Develop collaboratively with the Chancel Choir Director, Contemporary Music Director,
Children's Music Director, other music staff, Senior Pastor and the Staff Parish Relations
Committee, to provide an ongoing strategy for continuous improvement and to participate in continuing education experiences designed to address identified areas of growth in order to improve, enhance and develop gifts and skills in ministry.
