Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Board Certified Palliative Care Doctor to do consults in a Acute Care Hospital to provide specialized medical care focused on improving the quality of life for patients with serious, chronic, or life-limiting illnesses. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of symptom management, patient-centered communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration. In this role, you will deliver comprehensive palliative care services across inpatient and outpatient settings ensuring that patients receive holistic support that addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Your expertise will contribute to enhancing patient comfort, dignity, and overall well-being during challenging health journeys.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough patient assessments to evaluate symptoms, treatment goals, and psychosocial needs within a palliative care framework.
- Develop individualized care plans that incorporate pain management, symptom control, and psychosocial support aligned with patient preferences.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including nurses, social workers, chaplains, and specialists to coordinate comprehensive care delivery.
- Administer or oversee the administration of medications such as opioids and other symptom-relief agents following best practices and safety protocols.
- Educate patients and their families about prognosis, treatment options, and advance care planning to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Manage complex cases involving end-of-life care in various settings such as hospitals, hospices, or long-term care facilities.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations including HIPAA standards while maintaining meticulous documentation in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Engage in ongoing clinical research and quality improvement initiatives to advance palliative medicine practices.
Skills
- Extensive knowledge of hospice & palliative medicine principles and practices.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or similar platforms for documentation and care coordination.
- Strong understanding of pain management techniques including opioid stewardship and non-pharmacological interventions.
- Experience with symptom control modalities such as botulinum toxin treatment or advanced airway management when necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients facing complex emotional and physical challenges; compassionate bedside manner essential.
- Familiarity with medical imaging interpretation relevant to symptom assessment; knowledge of medical terminology is required.
- Prior experience working within inpatient hospital environments or hospice settings; familiarity with critical care or ICU experience is advantageous.
