Job Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for providing pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for the sick and injured in accordance with established protocols and regulatory requirements. Working as part of a team, the EMT ensures timely, compassionate, and efficient care to patients in a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations. The EMT maintains equipment and vehicles, documents services provided, and supports other clinical and operational duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Responds to emergency calls and provides basic life support in line with EMT scope of practice
- Assesses patient condition, determines nature of illness or injury, and provides appropriate treatment
- Assists in lifting, moving, and transporting patients safely via ambulance or other approved methods
- Communicates effectively with dispatch, emergency departments, physicians, and family members
- Operates and maintains medical equipment including oxygen, suction units, stretchers, and monitors
- Documents all patient care activities accurately in accordance with department and regulatory standards
- Maintains cleanliness, readiness, and inventory of emergency response vehicles and equipment
- Supports emergency room or hospital transport team functions as needed
- Participates in quality improvement activities and continuing education requirements
- Follows safety and infection prevention protocols in all patient care activities
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Knowledge of EMT scope of practice and emergency care procedures
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills under pressure
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergent and unpredictable environments
- Proficiency in documentation and use of electronic medical records (EMRs)
- Physical strength and stamina to lift patients and operate heavy equipment
- Commitment to patient confidentiality, professionalism, and team collaboration
- Must be able to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of an accredited EMT program
Licenses/Certifications
- Current EMT certification in the state of practice required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred
- Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets company standards (if driving responsibilities are included)
Experience
- One (1) year of experience in pre-hospital emergency care preferred
