Patient Access Registration Specialist

Position Summary
Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a courteous, detail-oriented Patient Access Registration Specialist to support front-end patient access and registration services. This role is essential to creating a positive first impression for patients while ensuring accurate registration, insurance verification, and payment collection for each encounter.
The Specialist greets patients in person and by phone, accurately enters and verifies patient demographic and insurance information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), and supports efficient patient flow across hospital and clinic settings. When assigned to the Emergency Department, this role works closely with the ED care team to expedite patient care and improve outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet patients and visitors professionally and courteously, in person and by phone
- Accurately register patients and verify demographic, insurance, and guarantor information in the EHR
- Verify insurance eligibility and coverage for each encounter
- Collect, post, and document patient copayments and payments
- Scan and upload required documentation, including identification and insurance cards
- Ensure all required consent and HIPAA forms are completed and signed
- Apply correct patient identification bands and use two patient identifiers
- Provide general clinic and hospital information to patients as appropriate
- Assist patients with records requests and release of information forms
- Monitor incoming calls and faxes and route appropriately
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA and PSMC privacy requirements
- Support departmental productivity and accuracy standards
Emergency Department Assignment
- When assigned to the Emergency Department, collaborate with the ED team to support timely patient care
- ED assignments include an additional $1.00 per hour premium pay

Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience
- Customer service experience strongly preferred
- Prior healthcare or hospital registration experience preferred
- Electronic health record experience (Cerner preferred)
Certifications & Skills
- Current AHA BLS (Heart Saver) certification required
- Strong computer and typing skills, including Microsoft Office and Teams
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions

- Base Compensation Range: $18.00 - $27.83 hourly, based on years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader.
- Cross-Training Differential: Patient Access Registration staff who are trained and regularly scheduled for shifts and work in the ED receive a Cross-Training Differential of an additional $1.00 per hour.
