Assistant Land Surveyor

About the Role
We are looking for an Assistant Land Surveyor to support field survey operations across a wide range of district projects. This role works directly with the Land Survey Party Chief to deliver accurate, reliable data that informs planning, design, construction, and emergency response needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with boundary, topographic, and as-built field surveys.
- Set up, operate, and maintain survey instruments, including total stations, levels, GPS units, and data collectors.
- Measure and record distances, angles, and elevations in line with District and industry standards.
- Maintain clear and detailed field notes, sketches, and photo documentation.
- Upload and organize survey data for CAD processing.
- Mark and maintain survey control points, stakes, and monuments.
- Manage the care, calibration, storage, and inventory of survey equipment and safety gear.
- Provide rapid field support for urgent or emergency survey requests.
- Follow all safety protocols, including traffic control when required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience
- Three years of full-time paid experience on a survey team performing routine survey work, including one year of on-the-job field training.
- Ability to interpret civil engineering drawings.
- Hands-on experience collecting survey data using total stations, levels, GPS, and related tools.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or surveying, including coursework in plane and route surveying, with three years of survey experience.
- OR
- Two years of civil engineering coursework plus four years of land surveying field experience, including one year of on-the-job field training.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to make precise measurements and accurate mathematical calculations.
- Ability to prepare basic civil engineering sketches.
- Familiarity with CAD software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Certification
- Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) Certificate issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
Salary : $115,000 - $134,000
