R&D Hardware Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer
About The The Role,
The Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer provides technical and project leadership for Packsize’s value engineering efforts. This role helps lead a small team of engineers while remaining hands-on in value engineering work. The position is accountable for planning, prioritizing, and delivering measurable cost-reduction initiatives across machine platforms.
What You’ll Do
Up to 15% travel as needed.

About The The Role,
The Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer provides technical and project leadership for Packsize’s value engineering efforts. This role helps lead a small team of engineers while remaining hands-on in value engineering work. The position is accountable for planning, prioritizing, and delivering measurable cost-reduction initiatives across machine platforms.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and prioritize value engineering initiatives across multiple machine platforms
- Analyze machine architectures for standardization, simplification, and reuse opportunities
- Drive modularity and platform thinking across mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
- Provide technical leadership and direction to other engineers
- Own project planning, execution, and reporting of cost-reduction initiatives
- Perform system-level design trade studies balancing cost, performance, reliability, and serviceability
- Partner cross-functionally with Procurement, Manufacturing, Service, Quality, and Supply Chain
- Review and approve engineering changes and ensure proper ECO/ECN execution
- Mentor engineers in design-to-cost, DFM/DFA, and value engineering methodologies
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
- 10 years of experience in mechanical design and sustaining engineering
- Demonstrated leadership experience in technical or project-based roles
- Proven track record of delivering measurable BOM and lifecycle cost reductions
- Strong project management and cross-functional coordination skills
- Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD and engineering change processes
- Exposure to electrical systems, sensors, PLCs, and general industrial controls
- Experience working directly with suppliers and contract manufacturers
- Background in modular product platforms or configurable machine systems
- Hands-on prototyping and machine build experience
