Press Operator

Position Title: Flexographic Press Operator

Summary:

Sets up and operates flexographic printing press to print designs or lettering on rolls of flexible plastic film, paper, and nonabsorbent stock by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Reads job orders and mount specified printing plate and printing sleeves, installs sleeves on shaft and secures assembly in bed of press.

• Fills dye fonts with prescribed inks of dyes

• Adjust position of sleeves to print two or more colors without overlapping or smearing previously printed area.

• Load rolls of paper or plastic and secures roll on press in feed position

• Control web tension

• Starts press adjusting speed, tension and alignment of printing plate as necessary

• Cuts sample of printed material from end of each printed roll and inspects for imperfections such as blurred or off center impressions

• Clean plates, sleeves and dye fonts. Lubricates press as needed per Maintenance instructions

• Ability to match colors on press using color standards using X-rite and Viscosity

• Perform simple computer data entry

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED is required. Candidates must be reliable, responsible and be able to work in a group environment. Regular attendance is required to maintain operation, and candidates must have the ability to understand English writing and verbal instructions and follow them accurately.

Standing: Continuous standing to operate press, surface is concrete with rubber matting in some areas

Walking: Continuous walking is required to monitor press, pick up supplies and to load and unload rolls

Sitting: Occasionally may sit while monitoring press

Frequently lifting 25 to 50 pounds depending on job completing

Rolls: Film rolls vary in size and weight. Length is from 13 in to 49 in. Weight varies from 25 to 336 pounds per roll. (Rolls over 50 pounds will be required to use chain hoist or roll cart.

Buckets: Clear ink with ink buckets or supplies requiring 20 to 50 pounds of force. Average 25 pounds; distance of 20 ft

Pushing: Occasionally pushes cart with ink buckets or supplies requiring 20 to 50 pounds of force. Average 25 pounds; distance up to 30 feet. Frequently pushes wheeled carts with cylinders, 50 pounds of force 50 to 100 feet

Pulling: Occasionally has to pull carts with ink buckets or other supplies up to 50 pounds of force. Average 25 pounds; distance up to 30 feet

Climbing: Frequently has to climb up steps or ladder, 12 in steps maximum to perform light maintenance work and essential functions to monitor press only

Stooping/Bending: Frequent bending is required to load press and unload press. Bending is also required to monitor and pour ink into pumps 24 inches high

Crouching/Squatting: Occasionally required to observe and monitor press and ink pumps.

Squatting required to unbox rolls from pallet

Kneeling: May be performed instead of squatting while unboxing supplies

Reaching: Frequently reaches 20-36 inches while operating press and loading/unloading.

Occasionally reaches 37 to 54 inches checking press controls and using hoist

Hand Task: Power grip used frequently on handling rolls (Average 75 per shift-each handled twice). Occasionally uses various hand tools for light maintenance and completing loading and unloading of each job. Job required using controls on press, hoist and computer essential functions.

Work Environment:

Shifts may vary each month and employees may be required to work overtime depending on t he workload.

Hours are: Day Shift 6:00 am-6:00pm and Night Shift 6:00 pm-6:00 am with 10 min. before and 10 min. after being required, breaks and lunch times scheduled with Supervisor.

Exposure to noise, chemical fumes, moving mechanical parts

Sensing requirements for Press Operator: talking, hearing, near vision

Required to read job specification, job tickets and tape measure accurately, must write on labels to identify rolls

Tools: Hand trucks, wrenches, hammers, box cutter, small hand tools for maintenance and quality control

Temperaments: Performs repetitive tasks while operating press, works with specific instructions, works with others and assists others when needed, communicates and deals with other positions and performs a variety of tasks while making judgments and decisions to ensure high quality and productivity are met. Attention to detail is an essential part of this position.
