Position Scope
The Field Mechanic performs various tasks to aid daily operations at a project site. They are involved in preventative maintenance, repair troubleshooting/operating of equipment to diagnose problems, and inspecting for defects for all types of heavy equipment. Their duties are directed by the Lead Mechanic and project assigned CM. The main responsibilities are geared toward maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient equipment fleet while also supporting the overall project.
Location & Travel: This role offers nationwide opportunities based on project needs. In addition to your base pay, you’ll receive a daily per diem to assist with living expenses while on assignment. This role includes regular rotational travel home from the job site. A company truck and fuel card will be provided.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Safety is priority number one. Observe all Health, Safety, and Environmental rules, including housekeeping practices, and participate in daily safety meetings.
- Promote and comply with all Company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform repairs and maintain all heavy equipment, including company-owned plowing/trenching machines, ancillary project equipment, and vehicles.
- Assist Construction Manager, co-workers, and subordinates with various mechanical and other related tasks.
- Welding, hard-facing, or fabricating plow/trencher wear components as required.
- Communicate with on-site Construction Manager and -Lead Mechanic for any maintenance concerns.
- Ability to operate and inspect equipment to diagnose defects.
- Repair hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical components.
- Ability to identify and orders parts and correctly complete backend documentation for record keeping.
- Conducts inspections of all company and rental equipment and supports field team to complete and review submitted inspection forms.
- Conduct all DOT inspections and repairs.
- Trains other mechanically inclined personnel as needed.
- Ability to repair and complete maintenance of equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
Education and Work Experience
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency.
- Valid CDL driver’s license, possesses commercial driver license, and/or endorsements preferred. (CDL B required, CDL A Preferred)
- 2 years of experience working on heavy equipment and construction sites is preferred.
- Must have be team-oriented, maintain discretion, and willing to receive constructive feedback.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward the goal of zero injuries.
- Mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical knowledge.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to understand units of force, pressure and torque and apply appropriate tooling adjustments for each.
- Be detail oriented and ability diagnose issues in a timely manner. Ability to work and collaborate well on a team to ensure team objectives are met.
- Ability to perform frequent lifting and bending motions. Manual dexterity is needed when manipulating materials.
- Able to lift over 50 pounds throughout assigned workday.
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor and use job-related hand tools.
- Able to work in extreme environments (rain, heavy winds, heat, etc.).
- Follow instructions and ask questions when not clear on what is expected.
- Possess basic knowledge of materials used in the line of work.
- Self-motivated and team, and customer-oriented
