Mechanical Engineering Consultant

PacificECS
Portland, OR Full Time
POSTED ON 9/30/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/28/2026

The Big Picture: Who is PacificECS?

PacificECS is a nimble, fast-growing MEP design-adjacent engineering consulting firm based right here in Portland. They specialize in optimizing existing buildings—think energy assessments, third-party design reviews, HVAC project development, and commissioning for parks, public infrastructure, and institutional facilities. Operating with a dynamic, startup energy, they take a highly technical, intelligent approach to solving complex engineering problems without the stifling corporate red tape.

Why Are We Adding This Role?

Business is booming, and the owner needs a reliable technical right-hand. This role is being added to take ownership of field assessments, functional testing, and deliverables including energy calculations, reports, and other items allowing the firm to scale and take on even larger, long-term contracts.

Why You’ll Want This Job

If you are tired of being a cog in a massive corporate wheel drafting the same layouts all day, this is your escape pod. You’ll work directly under the firm’s Owner (meaning excellent mentorship and direct line-of-sight to business growth), enjoy a local and yet somewhat remote schedule where you for sure work our core daily hours of 9am to 4pm, as well as the other others to create a full day of work. Flex your brain on a massive variety of unique, fast-paced projects where no two weeks look the same.

What the Day-to-Day Looks Like (The Work)

  • Hit the field: Conduct onsite building and mechanical system assessments, focusing heavily on complex HVAC, hydronic systems (pumps, chillers, boilers), dry-side HVAC, and digital controls.
  • Get hands-on: Execute functional testing and commissioning tasks in mechanical rooms, boiler rooms, and commercial/industrial buildings undergoing major renovations (no dirt work, you're working with existing structures).
  • Crunch the data: Perform energy calculations to justify efficiency projects, mechanical upgrades, and compliance measures.
  • Talk shop: Interface directly with clients and governmental entities, translating deep technical concepts into clear, actionable project parameters.
  • Build the blueprint: Help develop and document internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as PacificECS scales.
  • Manage the flow: Scope and execute multiple short-duration projects (averaging 3 months, ranging from $5k to $300k) from rapid ramp-up to final delivery.

What You Bring to the Table (The Requirements)

  • The Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline) with 2 to 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering or commissioning—ideally within a nimble, small-firm environment. An EIT designation is a major plus.
  • The Know-How: Deep technical knowledge of HVAC, hydronics, and digital controls, paired with the ability to read, interpret, and create mechanical system diagrams.
  • The Vibe: A self-starting, curious mind who can think proactively, navigate ambiguous startup environments, and isn't afraid to pick up the phone to talk to a client.
  • The Physicality: You're comfortable walking active jobsites, climbing ladders, navigating rooftops, lifting up to 50 lbs, and wearing PPE (hard hat, steel-toed boots).

Location, Pay, and Benefits

  • Where you'll be: This is a remote role, but you must live within commuting distance of Portland. You will be onsite for your first week of onboarding and will head into the Portland area weekly for client visits and team alignment.
  • The Bag: Starting wage is $38 to 44 per hour, with room for more based on your depth of experience.
  • The Perks: 401(k), full healthcare, vision, and dental insurance, 10 paid holidays, a generous PTO package (1 hour accrued per 25 hours worked), and Oregon sick leave (1 hour per 30 hours worked).

The Interview Process: What to Expect

We value your time, so we keep our process structured, transparent, and moving forward. The whole process takes about 6 weeks from soup to nuts:

  1. Initial Screening: A 30-minute video conversation with FloatHR to ensure alignment on goals, culture, and logistics.
  2. Technical & Owner Interview: A deep-dive interview with the Owner of PacificECS. While this can be done online if needed, we highly prefer to meet you in person locally so we can talk engineering shop and look at past projects together.
  3. Final Alignment & Offer: A final check-in to iron out the onboarding details and deliver your official offer.
