SUMMARY
We are considering an intermediate or advanced level mold making position. Design and fabricate molds employing a broad range of skills from sculpting, welding, woodwork, and metal fabrication. Create new patterns from scratch, or from 3D printed parts and refining, polishing, texturing, or modifying to desired effect. Use creativity and problem-solving skills to provide safe, efficient molds and quality parts. Repair all types of damaged or poorly functioning molds. Create jigs and fixtures out of various materials to improve production processes.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Creative, curious, artist/artisan/maker of some kind. A divergent thinker that gravitates to possibilities and finding the most effective solution. High aptitude for problem solving, flexible in a variety of working conditions: tedious or repetitive detail work, dirty/messy/loud environments, under pressure with tight deadlines, to quiet solitary clay work. Proficient using power tools and power equipment, has a history of seeking out and picking up new skills and craft, and is excited by a job that will ask them to do so. Prefer some experience in metalwork, woodwork, sculpture, machine shop. Thrives responding to open ended problems and solutions, as opposed to rote tasks, schedules or procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
- Manage mold building process from start to finish to meet product specifications and completion dates
- Create patterns through a variety of materials such as wax, polyester, 3DP/SLAs, clay, etc.
- Determine mold layout and parting lines in clay
- Fabricate molds from various materials: urethanes, silicones, epoxy, polyester
- Texture, polish or modify patterns
- Build jigs, fixtures, and master molds
- Use creativity and problem-solving skills to create molds that are durable, easy to use, and produce a quality part
- Test molds and tune for production
- Work in machine shop using various machines and perform welding, mill, and lathe work as needed
- Work in wood shop using various machines to complete projects as needed
- Repair existing molds with or without patterns
- Assist Engineer in preparing or making prototype parts and molds
- Requires multi-tasking and managing multiple projects at a time
- Respond to, trouble shoot and resolve production issues related to molding
- Communicate well to ensure customer and production needs are met on all projects
- Adapt and seek out ways to continually improve molding processes
- Perform other duties as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS (DOE):
- 3-5yrs experience mold making in urethane, silicone, epoxy and polyester
- Requires multi-tasking and managing multiple projects at a time
- Experience working with various mold materials: urethane, silicone, epoxy, and polyester products
- Experience using the necessary hand tools, and power equipment needed to make molds, pins, mandrels, jigs, and fixtures.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude
- Able to combine creativity, technical, and artistic abilities to find simple solutions to complex problems
- Technical training in various fabrication processes such as plastic molding, woodworking, or metalworking
- Ability to visualize, plan and work in 3 dimensions
- Ability to perform fine motor tasks with tactile dexterity
- Ability to grasp and operate hand tools safely for most or all of shift
- Ability to sit and/or stand in one place and attend to detail for most or all of shift
- Ability to communicate well at all levels on a project
- Ability to work with adhesives, urethanes, epoxies, silicones, and other plastics
- Ability to understand and use basic computers and touch screens
- Ability to lift product up to 75 lbs. occasionally and frequently lift to 30 lbs.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- 5 yrs experience in production mold making setting
- Experience creating/altering patterns by hand
- Experience working with anatomical or human figure related to prosthetics, art, sculpture, special effects, animatronics, or medical simulation.
- Experience using hand and power tools to bring surfaces to high polish.
- Some experience using a lathe, mill, router table
- Welding/brazing
- Experience with lay-up mold making processes
- Experience mentoring less experienced staff
