Overview:
PNNL is accelerating the transition to a sustainable, energy efficient, resilient, and net-zero emission campus through innovation and actionable solutions. This is a senior Sustainability/Energy engineering position with the opportunities to apply knowledge of technical information and regulatory requirements such as the Energy codes, net-zero and high-performance sustainable buildings performance standards, commissioning and continuous commissioning of buildings, and advance metering into PNNL’s campus planning and facility operations. There are opportunities to advance state of the art technologies and working with community partners to achieve net zero emission campus, community, and the world. This position will have a suit of analytic software available to perform achieve sustainability/energy goals and objectives.

Responsibilities:
The sustainable/energy engineer will support PNNL’s award winning Sustainability Program and the Facility and Infrastructure Operations division. This position will have the opportunity to:
  • Plan and implement technologies such as district energy system, air/ground source heating, renewable distributed energy systems, small modular reactors, and on-site energy storage to achieve net-zero emission campus.
  • Develop and implement strategy to achieve caron-pollution free electricity (CFE).
  • Plan and oversee the reconfiguration, maintenance, operation and alteration of equipment, machinery, buildings, structures, and other laboratory facilities.
  • Work with a diverse team of researchers, facility operation personal to perform or oversee ASHRAE Energy/Water Audits and commissioning/recommissioning of buildings.
  • Perform high performance sustainable buildings evaluation via the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and/or the Guiding Principles (GP) for Federal Sustainable Building Standard.
  • Perform or provide oversight of commissioning of plant facility modifications and new constructions with the objective of verifying, documenting, and ensuring that modified and new building systems achieve design requirements.
  • Execute life cycle cost effective energy/water conservation projects under 3rd party Energy Service Companies (ESCO) or Utility Energy Services Companies (UESC).
  • Leverage data-drive approach such as the use of building automation systems, data analytic capabilities, fault diagnostic and detection, and other various software packages to reduce energy and water use, and increase overall campus sustainability, and smart laboratory operations.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA or higher and 3 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified or in process to be Commissioning Professional (e.g., Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) through the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE)).
  • Professional Engineer Licensure (Mechanical or Electrical).
  • Knowledge with EISA Sec 527, EPACT 2005 Sec 203, Energy Act 2020, and various ASHRAE standards.
  • Knowledge with commissioning of new construction projects and major modification of existing facilities.
  • Knowledge with the use of the following software: EnergyCap, JCI Metasys and Alerton building automation systems, and SkySpark.
  • Knowledge interpreting and development of HVAC Sequence of Operations (SOOs).
  • Knowledge of Facility Operations on DOE laboratories.

Salary : $109,000 - $138,000
