About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Harbormaster I. This is an entry-level position that plays a crucial role in assisting with the management and operations of our Harbor or Port facility.
This position serves as a foundational role for individuals aspiring to pursue a career in harbor management and maritime operations. The Harbormaster I reports to the Harbormaster Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist senior Harbormasters in overseeing day-to-day Port operations, including vessel traffic management, mooring assignments, and cargo handling activities.
- Learn, comprehend, and adhere to the District's Port Terminal Tariff, Port regulations, safety protocols, and environmental guidelines to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the Port.
- Foster positive relationships with harbor users to enhance customer satisfaction and promote a welcoming and professional Port environment.
- Create and maintain a reference of index cards containing the ship's registry and characteristics, including taking photographs of deep draft vessels in Port as necessary and update vessel characteristics.
- Coordinate with facilities personnel to ensure customer requests are completed.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant coursework in maritime studies, business administration, or related field preferred.
- A current, valid California Class C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.
- Ability to swim.
- Incumbent must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal and State Maritime facilities requirements.
