The special education teacher assistant helps monitor and supervise students to ensure a safe and orderly environment within the classroom.

- Assist classroom teacher with instructional duties and specialized tasks
- Work with individuals, small groups, or large groups
- Provide programmed practice activities and repetitions as developed by teacher/therapist
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials
- Assist students with electronic communication devices, switches, pointers, feeders
- Perform clerical tasks (copies, filing)
- Maintain instructional materials
- Administer tests, homework, make-up work
- Serve as information source for substitute teachers
- Participate in development and support of special education programs
- Participate in implementing student behavior plans
- Assist with behavior modification and de-escalation techniques
- Monitor students in various environments to maintain safety
- Monitor student behavior, time-outs, and in-class detentions
- Encourage positive attitudes and self-esteem
- Respond to emergency situations
- Record and report student concerns promptly
- Model appropriate social behavior
- Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality
- Monitor daily schedules and behavior plans
- Assist with personal care: toileting, hygiene, diapering, clothing, wash-up
- Assist with breakfast, lunch, snacks, and clean-up
- Support feeding tasks (heating food, grinding food, collecting lunch money)
- Lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment
- Assist with mobility needs: lifting/positioning, wheelchairs, loading/unloading buses
- Escort students around school and on field trips
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, medical professionals, and therapists
- Maintain records and files
- Communicate student concerns and help resolve issues
- Support substitute teachers
- Maintain professional competence
- Perform other duties as assigned by teacher/administrator
PreK
- Associate's degree in early childhood or
- At least 60 college credit hours and at least 12 early childhood college credit hours or
- High school diploma/GED, meet minimum standard of ACT WorkKeys Silver level certification scores, and at least 12 early childhood college credit hours

- Associate's degree or higher or
- At least 48 college credit hours
