Supervisor of Special Education (10 month position)
Overview:
Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Supervisor will assist in the implementation and administration of the District’s Pupil Personnel services and programs in the areas of special education, speech and language, social-emotional & behavior supports, psychology, social work, occupational & physical therapy, and any other services upon the request of the Director of Special Education. The supervisor will ensure that the aforementioned supervision will conform to district policy and state & federal law.
Qualifications:
- Must hold current CT certification (092) Administrative Certificate and (165) Special Education or Related Service Certification
- At least 5 years experience as a provider of special services
- At least 2-3 years of experience in a school or district leadership role, preferably in the capacity of special education leadership
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
- Proficiency with CT-SEDS
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director in developing and administering the district’s special education programs in accordance with board policy, goals,and objectives; Department of Education rules and regulations; and federal laws and regulations
- Assists with the hiring, training, and evaluation of special education staff, providing direction and support
- Works with other administrators, teachers, parents, and community groups to develop and implement effective programs
- Supports the Director in determining needs for the special education budget, including new or additional programs and supports
- Reviews requisitions submitted by Department staff for materials, supplies & equipment, and makes recommendations for approval to the Director.
- Ensures procedures for referral, eligibility, placement and exit of students requiring special education services
- Assists with the assignment of special education staff to ensure effective utilization and provision of special services & programs in order to provide FAPE to all students
- Assists in the supervision of the PPT process, chairing and finalizing IEPs, and collaborating with relevant staff and administration on IEP development
- Ensure all documents in CTSEDS are completed accurately, compliant with state and district requirements, and submitted in a timely manner
- Assists with Birth to Three transition and Pre-K programming
- Facilitates out of district PPTs
- Keeps abreast of current research and techniques, sharing information with staff, to ensure that needs are appropriately identified, assessed, and provided appropriate education programs and services designed to meet their unique needs
- Provides on-site support in schools, collaborating and modeling for staff to ensure the appropriate inclusion of special education students in all subject classes, school programs, and activities
- Monitors pre-referral intervention services as part of tier III SRBI to ensure least restrictive practices, quality interventions, and screening data prior to referral for initial evaluation
- Maintains the confidentiality of student information, school personnel, and School Functions
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, or Director of Special Education
