Lead Owl Research Biologist for Non-profit - Master's Degree or Equivalent

Role Description The Lead Owl Research Biologist will guide and implement owl-focused research projects for this full-time, on-site role located in Charlo, MT. Responsibilities include designing and executing field studies, conducting population surveys, capturing and banding owls, collecting biological samples, and monitoring nests and habitats in varying weather and terrain. The role involves overseeing data collection and management, performing data analysis, preparing scientific reports and publications, and presenting findings to stakeholders, partners, and the public. The Lead Biologist will supervise and mentor research staff, technicians, volunteers, and interns, ensuring adherence to research protocols, safety standards, and ethical guidelines for wildlife handling. Additional duties include contributing to grant proposals, supporting outreach and education activities, coordinating with collaborating organizations, and helping maintain research equipment and field stations.
Qualifications

• Wildlife and ecology expertise, including experience with field-based wildlife studies, population monitoring, and habitat assessment.
• Research skills encompassing study design, data collection, data management, statistical analysis, and scientific writing.
• Laboratory skills relevant to wildlife biology, such as sample handling, basic microbiology techniques, and maintaining accurate lab records.
• Knowledge of owl or raptor biology, behavior, and conservation issues, or a strong interest in developing this specialization.
• Master’s degree or equivalent experience in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience leading field teams, training staff or volunteers, and managing research timelines and priorities.
• Proficiency with GPS, mapping tools, and common data analysis software; familiarity with statistical programs is beneficial.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for scientific publications, grant writing, and public or partner presentations.
• Ability to work safely in remote field conditions, including hiking in rough terrain, working at night, and in variable weather.
• Valid driver’s license and eligibility to operate organizational vehicles; experience with 4x4 or off-road driving is an asset.
