JOB TITLE:  Middle School Orchestra Director

 

REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL and Coordinator of Fine Arts

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid Kentucky Teacher Certificate 
  2. Teaching Certificate for Instrumental Music all grades        

 JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

To lead students towards the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional and     psychological growth through learning orchestral music.  Creating excellence in music performance.

 

SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS:

 

Past experience in a successful school orchestra program is preferred.  Outstanding experience with violin and viola is preferred, but not required for consideration.  This position includes collaborative teaching with fellow teachers at all levels of our orchestra program. 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

     

  1. Basic computer skills including use of mouse and keyboard to navigate computer, e-mail, and websites
  2. Subject matter in area of assignment
  3. Policies and objectives of assigned program and activities
  4. Curriculum, instruction and assessment
  5. Short and long-range planning techniques applicable to area of specialty
  6. Record-keeping skills
  7. Oral and written communication skills
  8. Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities
  9. Pedagogy in area of certification

 

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities: 

 

  1. Conducting performances with 6-7-8 orchestra classes
  2. Participation and creation of extra-curricular string ensembles and/or elective classes
  3. Collaborative teaching model that involves two teachers engaged at all times in class
  4. Participation in district and regional clinics, auditions and performances with students
  5. Performances in a wide range of community and school events
  6. Responsible for the financial and organizational oversight of the middle school orchestra program.
  7. Participation in fine arts PLC and other professional learning activities
  8. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and times designated.
  9. Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning with the limits of the resources available.
  10. Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request.
  11. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  12. Employs a variety of instructional techniques, consistent with the space and technology available.
  13. Strives to work within the district’s philosophy and commitment of Every Art for Every Child.
  14. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  15. Is knowledgeable of the learning abilities of students and evaluates student progress regularly.
  16. Maintains complete and accurate records as required by state and local policies.
  17. Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policies. 
  18. Makes provision to be available to students and parents for educational purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms through conference days.
  19. Individually and cooperatively with other teachers, supervises students in and out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  20. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and serves on assigned committees.
  21. Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods.
  22. Assist in the selection of materials and equipment for their area.
  23. Accepts a shared responsibility for co-curricular activities.
  24. Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of their assigned students.
  25. Establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with others.
  26. Provides for his/her own professional growth in accordance with state/local/federal guidelines.
  27. Represents the school and community effectively and in a positive manner. 
  28. Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
  29. Meets the Standards and Indicators set forth in the Certified Personnel Evaluation Plan.
  30. Abides by the Code of Ethics for Kentucky Certified School Personnel.
  31. Adheres to the requirements of the District or school employee handbook, Owensboro Public Schools policies, and all applicable laws and regulations.
  32. Performs all other functions deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor that are reasonable and are covered by local policy or law.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

   

Indoor, environmentally controlled.  Typical office environment including but not limited to telephones, personal interruptions, background noises.  May require working with or near the public, parents, and children and will be subject to sounds, scents, and other related environmental factors.  This position will require dealing with conflict and requires use of sound judgment.

Travel Requirements: (Frequency and Duration)

  1. Less than 10% out of district
  2. Daily as needed within district boundaries

 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

  1. Instructional salary schedule based on rank and experience
  2. Certified employee with year-to-year contract until continuing contract is granted
  3. Certified benefits package
  4. Participates in Kentucky Teachers Retirement System (KTRS)
  5. FLSA Classification: Exempt
  6. Contract Days: 187

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Certified Evaluation Plan.  The evaluation will be conducted by the Principal and/or Coordinator of Fine Arts.
