COUNTY OF OWEN, INDIANA

POSITION: Tax Collection Deputy

DEPARTMENT: Treasurer

WORK SCHEDULE: As assigned

JOB CATEGORY: COMOT (Computer, Office Machine Operation, Technician)

Incumbent serves as Tax Collection Deputy for the Owen County Treasurer’s Office, responsible for accepting payments on personnel property and real estate taxes, researching parcels, and ensuring day to day operations are effective and efficient.

DUTIES:

Performs money management tasks, including but not limited to, posting payments received, balancing cash drawer, and reviewing payments for accuracy.

Assists coworkers, as needed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or GED.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, pronunciation and ability to maintain accurate files and prepare detailed reports.

Working knowledge of standard office procedures and ability to use various office equipment, including computer, calculator, copier, telephone, and fax machine.

Ability to use a variety of resources, tax software, and Excel spreadsheets.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal/professional conduct.

Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department records and information according to state requirements.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Commissioners, bank personnel, Redevelopment, title companies, attorneys, AFCS, SRI, Govtech, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to calculate/compute taxes and make simple arithmetic additions/subtractions.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations and plan/layout assigned work projects.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile individuals.

Ability to occasionally work extended hours and evenings.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs standard and recurring duties with work priorities and schedules determined by supervisor and service needs of the public. Errors are primarily detected through legally defined procedures, standard bookkeeping checks, and procedural safeguards. Work errors could result in an inconvenience to other agencies or public and/or loss of time to correct error.

III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, Commissioners, bank personnel, Redevelopment, title companies, attorneys, AFCS, SRI, Govtech, and the public for the purposes of giving and receiving information and rendering service.

Incumbent reports directly to Chief Deputy and/or Treasurer.

IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment and service counter, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, working in a noisy environment and near dust/dirt, lifting/carrying objects weighing under 50 pounds, handling/grasping objects, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, close/far vision, depth/color perception, keyboarding, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent may be exposed to potentially irate/hostile individuals.

Incumbent occasionally works extended hours and evenings.
