POSITION SUMMARY
The Field Service Technician is responsible for providing on-site technical support, diagnostics, service, and repairs for a diverse portfolio of equipment. This includes Bandit tree care and recycling equipment; Henke, Wausau-Everest, and Swenson snow equipment; as well as Vactor, TRUVAC, and Elgin environmental infrastructure equipment. This role combines strong mechanical and technical expertise with customer-facing responsibilities to ensure equipment is serviced safely, efficiently, and in alignment with company and OEM standards. Additionally, this position supports new, used, rental, and customer-owned equipment by minimizing downtime, delivering high-quality repairs, and maintaining strong customer relationships. The Field Service Technician is expected to operate independently and adapt to dynamic field conditions within a heavy equipment service environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment Diagnostics & Repair
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and control systems.
- Assemble, install, and integrate electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic components, including wiring of electrical panels and system connections.
- Develop and execute repair plans, including sequencing, parts identification, and component-level repairs to restore equipment to OEM specifications.
Field Service & Customer Support
- Travel to customer job sites to perform field service, diagnostics, and repairs across all major equipment systems, both remotely and on-site.
- Provide warranty support by evaluating and validating claims, coordinating with OEM, and submitting detailed service documentation.
- Communicate repair status, findings, and recommendations clearly while maintaining a high level of professionalism and customer service.
Work Order & Parts Management
- Identify and source required parts, materials, and tooling to support efficient completion of repairs.
- Accurately complete and maintain service reports, work orders, and documentation, ensuring proper tracking of labor, materials, and service activity within company systems.
Technical Proficiency & Equipment Operation
- Read and interpret parts diagrams, hydraulic and electrical schematics, and service manuals.
- Operate shop equipment, including forklifts and telehandlers, safely and effectively.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA and company safety standards in shop and field environments.
- Maintain a safety-first mindset when working in varying conditions, extreme temperatures and active job sites.
- Ensure all repairs and service activities meet company quality and safety expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE ENVIRONMENT
- 5 years of experience in equipment maintenance and repair; tree care, environmental, snow, construction, vocational truck, or similar equipment experience preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, with the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and service documentation. Familiarity with PLC systems and basic programming concepts preferred.
- Experience performing field service and working independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency with basic computer functions for service reporting, documentation, and communication.
- Must possess a personal set of hand tools and willingness to expand tool inventory as needed.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license, and if required to operate a commercial vehicle weighing more than 26,001 pounds, must be able to pass all requirements necessary to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for Department of Transportation (DOT) purposes and maintain an active license. Ensure all repairs and service activities meet company quality and safety expectations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work performed in both shop and field environments with exposure to weather, temperature extremes, noise, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, including the proper use of PPE
TRAVEL AND SCHEDULE EXPECTATIONS
- Based in Salt Lake City, Utah with regular local and regional field service travel to customer locations, jobsites, branch locations, and other assigned work areas using an assigned service vehicle or other approved company vehicle; occasional extended overnight travel may be required based on customer, equipment, service, training, or business needs.
- Standard Monday–Friday schedule with flexibility required to meet customer demand.
