WORK OBJECTIVE
An internship in the Development Services Department provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced planners on a wide range of projects and provides hands-on experience in urban planning while learning more about how municipal government functions.
The internship offers insight and practical knowledge related to multiple facets of the planning profession including current planning, long range planning, mobility, public art, and sustainability. The intern will work on various planning and development review projects including action items related to the Comprehensive Plan, Land Development Code, Mobility Plan, and provide support to team members on their respective projects that include zoning letters, lot splits, building permits, GIS development story map, and other administrative duties.
The City of Oviedo offers internships per semester, with no specific start or end date. The Development Services intern will report to the Development Services Director or their designee.
Essential Functions
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.
Assists with the development of both current and long-range development review and/or other planning activities.
Assists and provides information to the public.
Assists with special projects such as the Land Development Code Update, the Evaluation of Appraisals Review, the Mobility Plan and other special projects as determined by the Development Services Director or designee.
Prepares and maintains various planning maps, files, graphics, and records and assists with responses to information requests from the public.
Gathers, selects, compiles and analyzes data pertaining to characteristics of the community.
Provides information on status of development projects; coordinates and assists in the development review process as needed.
Prepares reports and supporting graphic display materials reflective of completed research and recommendations.
Undertakes research on best practices and/or specific themes as requested by Staff.
Accompanies Staff on field-trips to check specific site conditions.
Attends the meeting of the Public Arts Board, the Sustainability Task Force, the Land Development Code Committee, and other board meetings.
Shares knowledge with City staff to benefit City operations.
Supports a work environment which encourages clear and open communication and excellent customer service.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be enrolled in an urban and regional planning, geography, public administration, or similar program at an accredited college or university with completion of one year (normally 30 credit hours) toward a bachelor's degree.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and research practices.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
