What are the responsibilities and job description for the TOYOTA/AUTOMOTIVE DIESEL/RESTORATION MECHANIC position at OVERLAND CRUISERS 4X4?
Overland Cruisers is a specialty restoration and mechanical overhaul shop dedicated to classic Toyota Land Cruisers and Toyota trucks. We're looking for a full-time Automotive/Diesel Technician to join our small, dedicated team in Sonoita, AZ. This is an opportunity to work on vehicles with real history and character — not just routine repairs.
About the Role
As a technician at Overland Cruisers, you'll be hands-on with every stage of the vehicle's life at our shop — from initial diagnostics through full mechanical overhauls and ground-up restorations. Every truck that comes through our doors gets individual attention, and so does the person working on it. This isn't an assembly-line shop; it's a place where craftsmanship matters.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and drivetrain issues on classic Land Cruisers and Toyota trucks
- Perform engine, transmission, transfer case, and axle repairs and rebuilds
- Diagnose and repair mechanical diesel engine issues, including injection pump tuning and timing
- Service and repair Bosch VE rotary injection pumps and Zexel in-line injection pumps
- Complete suspension, steering, and brake system work
- Shift between projects as needed to support other mechanics, the shop manager, or the shop owner
- Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining consistent quality across each
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent per job
- Communicate clearly with shop management on job status, parts needs, and timelines
- Keep a clean, organized, and safe work area
Required
- Proven experience in automotive or diesel mechanical repair
- Strong diagnostic skills and ability to troubleshoot issues independently
- Comfort working with older vehicle systems, not just modern OBD-II diagnostics
- Flexible and able to shift focus mid-project to support teammates or shop leadership as priorities change
- Comfortable juggling multiple projects at once without losing consistency or quality
- Own hand tools (shop provides specialty and heavy equipment)
- Valid driver's license
- Reliable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented work ethic
- Willing and able to learn Toyota-specific systems and operating parameters from our on-site subject matter experts — general Toyota or Land Cruiser experience is not required
Preferred / A Big Plus
- Classic truck or 4x4 experience
- Background in mechanical diesel engine diagnostics
- Understanding of the theory and operation of Bosch VE rotary and Zexel in-line injection pump systems, with the ability to diagnose and repair them
- Toyota dealership experience, Master Diagnostic Technician certification, or ASE certifications
- A genuine appreciation for classic Land Cruisers and trucks
