What are the responsibilities and job description for the Computational Biologist / Bioinformatics Scientist position at Ovelle?
About the Company
Ovelle is revolutionizing fertility treatment through human in vitro oogenesis—producing eggs from somatic cells. We have developed technology to create the cell types of the ovary from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by manipulating expression of transcription factors and RNA-binding proteins. Notably, we are the first company to produce meiotic oogonia-like cells from human iPSCs. This is an important step towards in vitro oogenesis because activating meiosis has been a key challenge in the field. We will incorporate these meiotic oogonia-like cells into ovarian organoids to create synthetic ovaries capable of producing eggs. By innovating egg production, we aim to make fertility treatments more accessible and affordable. If we are successful, it will mark a paradigm shift in treatments for infertility, and offer a new path to parenthood for millions of people around the world. Come help us build an exciting future all of us want to live in.
About the Specific Role
We are looking for a Computational Biologist to own the analysis of the large, heterogeneous datasets that drive our science. Our wet lab generates single-cell RNA-seq, multi-omics, DNA methylation, and microscopy data at scale, and we need someone who can analyze this raw data to find insights into oogenesis. You will work with wet-lab biologists helping design experiments and running analyses. If you love the craft of squeezing real signal out of messy biological data, this role is for you.
How You Will Contribute
- Analyze single-cell RNA-seq data including quality control, normalization, integration across batches and conditions, clustering, cell-type annotation, differential expression, and trajectory analysis
- Integrate multi-omics datasets to build a coherent picture of cell identity and state across our iPSC-derived ovarian cell types
- Analyze DNA methylation data, including identification of differentially methylated regions and integration with expression data to characterize epigenetic state
- Build image analysis pipelines for both brightfield and fluorescence microscopy, including cell and organoid segmentation, tracking, morphological quantification, and extraction of biological features
- Apply, fine-tune, and where needed train deep learning models for segmentation, classification, and other image and sequence-based tasks
- Partner closely with wet-lab scientists to design experiments, and communicate results clearly
- Build reproducible, version-controlled pipelines so that analyses can be rerun
Qualifications
- Experience analyzing single-cell sequencing data including differential gene expression and cell-type annotation on real, messy datasets
- Experience with at least one of: multi-omics integration, DNA methylation analysis, or ATAC-seq
- Experience with microscopy image analysis, including segmentation of cells or organoids in brightfield and/or fluorescence images (Cellpose, StarDist, CellProfiler, Fiji, napari, or similar)
- Deep learning experience—fine-tuning pretrained models, and ideally training your own—using PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX
- Clear communicator who can explain a result, a caveat, or a methodological choice to a biologist who doesn't code, and to an engineer who doesn't do biology
- Prior exposure to stem cell biology, developmental biology, or reproductive biology is a plus but not required: we can teach the biology to a strong computational scientist
- No specific degree required. We care about what you can build and what you know
