downtown Bozeman, we report the stories that matter most to the people who live, work and play

here from local government, the environment, business, culture, wildlife and character of one of

Montana's most dynamic regions.

Explore Big Sky is published by Outlaw Partners, a Bozeman and Big Sky-based media and events

company with deep roots in Big Sky country. Outlaw Partners produces a portfolio of publications,

events and digital content that celebrate the Mountain West lifestyle. Joining our team means

joining a passionate, tight-knit, hardworking group meshed in all corners of our parent company.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced, community-minded Managing Editor to lead our editorial team

and serve as the editorial backbone of Explore Big Sky in both print and digital format. This is a

hands-on leadership role focused on day-to-day newsroom management. You will oversee

everything from story assignments and editing to publication schedules and staff development, all

while maintaining the high journalistic standards our readers rely on.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who thrives in a small, close-knit environment, values

the importance of local journalism, and brings creativity and organizational rigor to work and

doesn’t shy away from jumping in and helping the team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a small, dedicated editorial team, fostering a collaborative and supportive

newsroom culture.

• Oversee all editorial content from the print and digital iterations of EBS, and our Town Crier

newsletter, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and strong local relevance.

• Edit and proof copy for clarity, style, grammar, and AP Style compliance with an eye for small

details.

• Write and report original stories as needed, with a focus on local government, local sports,

business, and outdoor recreation.

• Work alongside the VP of Media to build a long-term plan for editorial growth and

sustainability.

• Cultivate and maintain relationships with local sources, community leaders, advertisers, and

readers throughout Big Sky and Bozeman.

• Manage the newspaper's editorial voice and ensure consistent brand standards across all

content.• Monitor and grow Explore Big Sky's digital presence, including the website and social media

channels, with a specific eye toward becoming the premier news source in Bozeman, just as we

have in Big Sky.

• Handle reader inquiries, letters to the editor, and community feedback with professionalism

and care.

Qualifications

• 5 years of journalism experience, with some in an editorial leadership or management role.

• Strong news judgment and a demonstrated commitment to accurate, ethical, community-

focused reporting.

• Exceptional editing and writing skills, with fluency in AP Style.

• Experience managing editorial workflows and publication schedules in a fast-paced

environment.

• Proficiency with digital content management systems (CMS), social media platforms, and

basic SEO principles.

• A collaborative spirit and the ability to motivate a small team through encouragement and

example.

• Familiarity with the Big Sky and Bozeman communities, or a strong desire to become

embedded in them.

• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field — or equivalent

professional experience.

Why Join Explore Big Sky & Outlaw Partners

• Work with a passionate, tight-knit team that genuinely cares about the stories it tells.

• Access the support and resources of Outlaw Partners, a respected and growing regional media

company.

• Make a real, tangible impact on the community you cover — your journalism matters here.
