What are the responsibilities and job description for the Advisory Consultant position at Out of the Box?
ABOUT THE ROLE
Out of the Box technology is a Dallas-based firm delivering outsourced accounting, financial advisory, and technology advisory services. This role sits inside our Functional Advisory practice, which exists to make sure technology transformations actually work, not just technically but operationally.
The job is split evenly between ERP implementation and accounting advisory. The right candidate is equally comfortable configuring QuickBooks Online and evaluating whether a client's AP controls are defensible. Most people are stronger on one side. We need someone who is strong on both.
This is a fully client-billable role reporting to the VP of Advisory. You own your engagements from scope to delivery.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Technology Implementation and Project Management
- Lead full-cycle implementations on QuickBooks Online and Intuit Enterprise Suite, covering requirements gathering, configuration, data migration, UAT, go-live, and post-go-live stabilization
- Design and implement integrations with surrounding SaaS tools including Salesforce, HubSpot, Bill.com, Ramp, Rippling, ServiceTitan, and Maxio
- Manage project timelines, client communications, and deliverable quality across multiple concurrent engagements
- Translate technical decisions into language that finance leadership can act on, and turn client requirements into system configuration that actually works
Accounting Advisory
- Perform accounting health checks: assess the state of a client's books, identify what is broken and why, and produce findings specific enough to be actionable
- Execute cleanup engagements including chart of accounts restructuring, transaction reclassification, and historical reconciliation
- Redesign finance processes that are not working, including month-end close, AP/AR workflows, and management reporting
- Evaluate control environments and identify gaps in segregation of duties, approval workflows, and financial oversight
- Conduct risk assessments and help clients understand which exposures to address first
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- CPA or equivalent credential
- Working knowledge of integrated SaaS tools in AP automation, CRM, payroll, and revenue management. You have connected these systems to a GL before.
- Accounting fundamentals strong enough to evaluate a set of books with authority and explain what is wrong to a CFO
- Project management skills that hold under pressure. You build plans, track them, and keep clients accountable.
- Client-facing experience that includes delivering findings people did not want to hear
Strongly Preferred
- Background in consulting, advisory, or outsourced accounting
- Hands-on QBO and/or IES implementation experience. Not platform familiarity. Actual deployment experience with real clients.
- Exposure to lower-middle-market or high-growth company finance operations, where resources are tight and the infrastructure is still being built
What the Job Actually Requires
The checklists above are filters, not the full picture. The people who succeed here can walk into a client environment that is messier than the scope suggested and figure out what to do anyway. That quality is not optional.
