What are the responsibilities and job description for the Actors for Reading of New Musical position at Out East Musical?
DESCRIPTION
Seeking Non-Union Actors of All Ages for Out East: A New Musical Comedy
**AUDITIONS DUE BY FRIDAY, APRIL 24th at 11:59PM**
ABOUT THE SHOW: OUT EAST: A New Musical Comedy is about the most obnoxious people you're still dying to get to know. Harper is a seventeen-year-old who believes that spending her summer in the Hamptons—“Out East,” if you will—is somehow the end of the world. Her mom is marrying into an old-money family (don’t ask how they got rich, ‘cuz we don’t know), complete with two new stepsiblings and an unfamiliar life. Topped off with a love triangle and innumerable jokes about your least favorite men in finance, Out East is a fresh, Gen Z-centered satire of New York’s elite.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:
HARPER (17) [Lead Role] thinks she knows even more than your least favorite English teacher did about the way the world works– she does not. She’s impulsive, a bit of a smart ass, and a little more sheltered than you’d expect from a kid growing up in New York City. To top it all off, she has lofty dreams of being a great filmmaker, bolstered by the belief that simply documenting the “truth” will have Netflix beating down her door. (Mezzo Belter, A3 - mix belt to E5)
MEGAN (40s) [Supporting Role] was really spunky and cool and young … in the Y2K era. She spent 25 years in corporate America as a single mom, so she does not have the rosiest outlook on the world. Settling down in the Hamptons with a nice enough guy feels like an ideal next chapter in her life. [Harper’s mom. Harold’s fiancée.] (Mezzo, A3 - C5)
HAROLD VANDEGIE (50s) [Supporting Role] is really rich. As his stock portfolio grows, his personality seems to shrink. He will dabble in cocaine, but only in a Wall Street kind of way. Against all odds, he genuinely loves Megan. [Megan’s fiancé. Genevieve and Jasper’s father.] (Rock Baritone, Bb3- F4)
GENEVIEVE VANDEGIE (17) [Supporting Role] wants you to know who she is. You’re her best friend until you’re not… but then maybe you will be again, it changes by the day. If this took place in California, she’d live on Rodeo Drive… but it doesn’t, so she lives on Main Street in Amagansett instead. She wears Roller Rabbit Pajamas to bed every single night, and has done so since the age of 2. Loves attention. [Harold’s daughter. Jasper’s sister.] (Soprano/Mix Belter, Bb3- mix belt to F5)
JASPER VANDEGIE (19) [Supporting Role] has minimal thoughts in his head. He is a nepo baby on an Ivy League crew team with gorgeous biceps. Speaks in a powerful fraccent. [Harold’s son. Genevieve’s brother.] (Rock Baritone C3 - F4)
JONAH (17) [Supporting Role] is charming in an effortless and messy kind of way. He is local, as in he lives in the Hamptons. He tries not to get mixed up in the summer people’s mess. In the context of this show, he fails at that goal miserably. He works various odd jobs within the Hamptons ecosystem to get by. The term “summering” is the bane of his existence. [Harper’s love interest] (Rock Baritenor, C3 - G4)
HAYDEN (19) [Supporting Role] is a wannabe finance bro, because his parents want him to be a finance bro. His entire existence channeled through immense guy energy. Speaks in a slightly lighter fraccent than Jasper, but a fraccent nonetheless. [Jasper’s best friend, Harper’s other love interest, Genevieve’s ex… guess this guy gets around!] (Pop Tenor, Eb4 - G4)
PENELOPE (40s) [Supporting Role] really cares about her reputation. She is a Hamptons transplant that wants to fool you that she came out of the womb wearing blue gingham. Every ounce of her energy gets poured into her son, who she believes will fail at life if she does not meddle. [Hayden’s Mom, Megan’s Frenemy] (Mezzo, A3 - C5)
ENSEMBLE: TWO female/nonbinary identifying performers (20s-40s), TWO male/nonbinary identifying performers (20s-40s). To play various speaking and singing roles, doubling as both teenagers and adults. Must be willing to understudy leading roles. Must have a good ear for difficult harmony, a great sense of rhythm, as well as comic chops. At least one ensemble member will read stage directions for the production. All voice types are welcome.
