JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title/Wage: Custodian $18.00/hr Classification: Non-Exempt
Hours/Week: 10-15 hours per week
Employee: Reports to: Pastor Jon
SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: Responsible for the cleaning and ongoing general maintenance of the church buildings and grounds. Complete required set-up and take-down for special events to be held in the church facility. Perform minor repairs, arrange for church volunteer involvement, and communicate with outside contractors as necessary. In addition, these individuals will work closely with the Building and Grounds Team and the Office Manager. Work outside of regularly scheduled hours will be needed for facility emergencies, unexpected events, snow/ice removal before worship. Employment offer contingent on completed background check.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.
- Maintain and clean all areas including the offices, gathering area, sanctuary, bathrooms, entire lower classroom level and gym. Duties include dusting, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, moving/assembling furniture, painting, sanitizing and hard floor waxing/wax stripping.
- Manage trash and recyclables
- Change light bulbs
- Consult with staff regarding the need for and be responsible for set-up and take-down for programs and events (holidays, Joyous Ringers, quilters, weddings, funerals, etc.)
- Regularly inspect church building and grounds for security and general operation concerns
- Mow lawn and apply fertilizer and/or weed suppression products or work with volunteers to cover these items.
- Promptly remove snow and ice from walkways and apply melting chemicals prior to funerals, weddings, and worship on Saturdays and Sundays
- Do painting as necessary
- Work with Buildings and Grounds Committee to meet contractors for the elevator , sump pump, fire extinguishers, and the following systems:HVAC, water heating, circulating pump, plumbing, and electrical.
- Collaborate with the Building and Grounds Committee to communicate facility needs and review work for quality and completeness. Submit to the church council for approval as necessary
- Maintain and clean kitchen including, but not limited to, training users on operation of equipment and maintaining supply levels
- Maintain/repair building/property maintenance equipment and maintain supply levels
- Coordinate volunteers for landscaping and gardening needs, as necessary
- Be availble for special events or to deal with maintenance or security concerns.
- Communicate clearly and on a regular basis with the second Buildings and Grounds Team and the church office staff
- Regular attendance and punctuality required
ADDITIONAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
While the following tasks are necessary for the Church, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other Church staff.
- Welcome church visitors as needed when you are working.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Three year’s experience in building maintenance and repair or related fields a plus
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments such as carpenter’s tools, electrician’s tools, garden tools, ladders, mechanic’s tools and HVAC controls. Ability to make minor repairs to equipment and machinery
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill such as cutting, painting and drilling
- Ability to exert physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling
