Summary
The Site Manager will manage and support the daily on-site operation of the Our House Tavern Museum; oversee interpretation, programming, visitor services, staff, volunteers, and preservation needs in accordance with the policies and bylaws of The Friends of Our House. The Site Manager will actively participate in hands-on interpretation and public engagement and serve as the primary on-site representative of the organization, ensuring that the site’s mission, educational goals, and operational standards are upheld through both leadership and direct visitor interaction.
Site Leadership & Operations
- Manage daily on-site activities, operations, and services of the historic site.
- Serve as the primary advocate and representative for the site with organizational leadership, partners, and the public.
- Provide engaged, professional leadership for all aspects of site operation, interpretation, preservation, maintenance, and visitor experience.
- Prepare and submit required plans, reports, records, and documentation including visitation and volunteer data, preservation monitoring, inventories, purchases, and financial records as required.
- Coordinate with The Friends of Our House Tavern Museum Board of Directors to ensure proper maintenance, safety, and protection of historic resources, staff, and visitors.
- Perform routine housekeeping and site cleanliness duties, including cleaning restrooms, floors, surfaces, trash removal, and preparing the site for daily public use.
Interpretation & Programming
- Oversee and actively participate in on-site and virtual interpretation, educational programming, tours, and special events.
- Assist with daily interpretation, staffing interpretive spaces, monitoring galleries, and engaging visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ensure interpretive content and educational programming align with approved plans, organizational standards, and best practices in public history and interpretation.
- Assist with school group orientations, logistics, and educational engagement.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders (including scholars, tribal representatives, and community partners) on interpretive planning and delivery.
Staff & Volunteer Management
- Train and supervise interpretive staff and volunteers; foster a positive, collegial, and mission-focused workplace culture.
- Build, support, and manage a volunteer corps to assist with interpretation, programs, and events.
- Empower staff and volunteers to make appropriate decisions within their roles while maintaining oversight and accountability.
Visitor Services & Public Engagement
- Create a welcoming, hospitable, and engaging environment for visitors through direct interaction and staff leadership.
- Supervise or support visitor services functions, including retail operations where applicable.
- Engage in community relations and public outreach in coordination with organizational leadership.
- Support and coordinate special events, public programs, and community partnerships.
Facilities, Safety & Collections Care
- Assist with the care, setup, and daily operation of the museum interactives and displays.
- Ensure emergency procedures are followed when necessary to protect visitors, staff, and historic resources.
- Monitor site conditions and report preservation or safety concerns promptly.
General Duties
- Champion and promote the mission, values, and educational purpose of the Our House Tavern Museum.
- Attend board meetings and provide reports, updates, and professional guidance on site operations, interpretation, programming, and preservation as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required. Some college coursework is preferred, particularly in history, public history, museum studies, education, park management, or a closely related field.
- Experience working with the public in an educational, visitor services, or customer-facing role is preferred.
- Supervisory or leadership is beneficial but not required.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Public speaking and presentation skills.
- Experience managing staff or volunteers.
- Comfortable communicating with the public and colleagues in person, in writing, and virtually.
- Proficiency with standard office software and virtual platforms (e.g., Microsoft 365).
- Experience handling cash and maintaining basic sales records; ability to responsibly manage a small on-site gift shop or sales area.

Work Environment

- Occasional travel may be required for trainings, meetings, conferences, or coordination with partner organizations.
Physical Demands
- Ability to tolerate exposure to heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and stair climbing.
- Ability to lift to 25–50 pounds depending on task.

Site Operating Hours & Seasonal Schedule
Opening Day
- Our House Tavern Museum opens to the public on Memorial Day each year.
- Opening Day hours are 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- The site closes on Labor Day each year. After this date, tours are available by appointment only.
Regular Open Hours
- Thursday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Sunday: 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Off-Season
- Off-season work, when scheduled, may include events, planning, training, site preparation, research, maintenance coordination, or special projects.
- All required off-season work and attendance at board meetings are paid at the employee’s regular hourly rate.
Background Check & Drug Screening
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
- This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug screening in accordance with organizational policy and applicable law.
This position is governed by the Bylaws and policies of The Friends of Our House Tavern Museum.
