What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Laborer position at OTA?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The General Laborer supports by assisting skilled trades personnel, including the Master Carpenter and Site Supervisor, in daily tasks at rail station locations. This position involves performing a wide variety of manual labor duties to ensure smooth project execution, site safety, and construction readiness across multiple rail station sites.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with loading, unloading, and transporting materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites
- Set up and dismantle work zones, scaffolding, temporary enclosures, and safety barriers
- Clean and maintain job sites, ensuring they are safe, organized, and free of hazards
- Perform demolition tasks as needed, including removing fixtures, flooring, and old materials
- Support Master Carpenter and Site Supervisor in framing, measuring, and material preparation
- Operate basic hand and power tools under supervision
- Assist with surface prep, including sanding, scraping, priming, or painting where required
- Follow all site safety protocols, wear appropriate PPE, and report unsafe conditions
- Perform flagging, barricading, or traffic control duties as required by project operations
- Participate in job site cleanup and disposal of construction debris
- Support other duties and tasks as assigned by the Site Supervisor or project leads
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Minimum 1 year of construction or general labor experience preferred, but willing to train the right candidate
- Ability to take directions and work as part of a team in a physically demanding environment
- Basic knowledge of tools and construction safety practices
- Reliable transportation to job sites, which may vary within Maryland
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs. regularly and work on feet for extended periods
