Director of Music
Osseo UMC is over 100 years old and values its traditional worship expression. We seek a passionate and skilled Music/Choir Director to lead and oversee the activities of the choir and other musicians to support worship services and the message of God’s love and grace.
Essential Functions
- Partner with the Pastor and worship committee (as needed) to select congregational, choir and special music for weekly services, and special services throughout the year
- Select and curate choir repertoire for worship services and special services
- Schedule and lead regular choir rehearsals (end of August - May) and other rehearsals as needed
- Schedule special music on Sundays when the choir is not singing
- Foster and develop relationships and skills of musicians at OUMC
- Coordinate, recruit and support adult choir members
- Communicate regularly (written and verbal) with Pastor, staff and musicians
- Serve as worship leader as needed/monthly
- Partner with the Worship Committee in managing a yearly budget, including recommending resources and equipment necessary for worship
- Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent relevant experience in choral directing.
Other Responsibilities
- Attend necessary staff, team, and committee meetings.
- Maintain music library, copyrights and related materials.
- Provide leadership for the church’s bell choir either by directing them or supervising others to direct.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.

Technical/Music Skills - Proficient skills as a vocalist, pianist and conductor; additional instruments are a bonus. Background in both traditional and contemporary church music styles with a specific interest and ability in traditional worship. Able to communicate clearly (written and verbal) and utilize spreadsheets to track ministry needs.
Collaborative - Creates a spirit of welcome and openness that invites musically talented and those interested in music to learn and grow together. Encourages musicians to be a team and collaborates with pastor, staff and others.
Ministry Management - Identifies how the objectives of a ministry plan support the vision of OUMC. Determines needed resources (practical and people), develops a realistic and thorough implementation plan, communicates with volunteers and participants. Uses good judgement in decision making and executes plans, evaluating after completion.
Worship Leadership - Designs and facilitates relevant and inspiring worship; combines elements of theology, music and art to promote experiences of the sacred; crafts worship flow that reinforces a theme or purpose; fosters worship moments that invite participants into an encounter with the divine; creates liturgical moments that embrace the work of the people in worship.
Time Management - Is able to prioritize tasks that contribute to ministry goals, use time effectively, respecting the time of others.
