What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Assistance Counselor (.8 FTE) Long Term Substitute position at Osseo Area Schools?

Job Summary: To inspire and prepare each and every scholar with the confidence, courage and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning. Design and deliver data-driven counseling services; counsel scholars individually and in small groups about personal concerns; maintain contact and communication with guardians/caregivers of scholars; refer scholars and guardians/caregivers to appropriate specialists, special programs and/or community agencies; consult with teachers, staff, and guardians/caregivers regarding needs of individual scholars; participate in, coordinate, and/or conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school; make appropriate and equitable use of instructional resources and technologies; implement the goals and objectives of the district and the school and/or program for which employed; provide in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous learning and services when applicable. Willing to participate in district/building leadership activities. Ability to be flexible with work hours to meet the needs of guardians/caregivers, the district, building, and department at the discretion of the supervisor. To provide prevention and intervention services for students exhibiting high risk behaviors and their families in the areas of chemical abuse, truancy, and other acting out behaviors.

This is a temporary long term substitute position from 2/5/26- 5/426 with possibility of extension.

Responsibilities And Tasks Include

  • Work with building administration and counselors to identify students exhibiting high risk behaviors (i.e. chemical use, truancy, discipline issues, family concerns, runaway, anxiety, depression).
  • Conduct chemical pre-assessments with students as appropriate.
  • Participate in building student assistance teams.
  • Meet with students referred by building student assistance teams.
  • Provide one-to-one counseling and support groups for students as time permits.
  • Provide family consultation and support as necessary.
  • Collaborate with community agencies to provide services to students and their families.
  • Develop and/or implement prevention programs such as peer leadership groups, peer tutoring, mentor programs, etc. as time permits.
  • Other duties as assigned by principal and student services coordinator

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Include

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Possess strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to assess chemical concerns in students.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with truant and/or other high risk youth.
  • Knowledge of dynamics of chemical use, abuse and dependency and its effects on individuals, families, peers.
  • Knowledge of current counseling theories and practices with experience in individual and group counseling and prevention best practices.
  • Knowledge of community resources for youth and families.

Minimum Qualifications Include

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) and hold a valid MN PELSB license in school counseling, school social work, or school psychology.
  • If not currently licensed, must be willing and eligible to apply for and receive a Tier 2 license.*
