Description
Major Role: To serve as an adult mentor for students with refugee backgrounds in the Oshkosh area according to grant provider expectations
Mentor Responsibilities:
Provides the mentees with support in the development of social and life skills. Examples include:
Facilitation of community sports involvement (such as participation in Oshkosh United, a traveling soccer team)
Facilitation of access to YMCA memberships at income-level appropriate rates
Coordination and organization of group outings to Wisconsin state parks, Little Farmer, and other local attractions
Assists the mentees with understanding American culture while maintaining and celebrating the youth’s cultural heritage. Past activity examples include:
Taking SRBs hiking, skiing, ONHS African dance teams
Provides opportunities for social engagement with peers by
Organizing peer-to-peer programs
Provides opportunities to participate in civic and community service activities;
Provides tutoring or other academic support in the areas of English language, math, or other social, educational, or vocational skills;
Assists with transitions in school, such as the transition between middle and high school, or high school to post-secondary education;
FAFSA and college applications
Supports career development through vocational skill building, resume drafting, training on workers’ rights, or other career-focused training
Provides opportunities that support development in health and financial literacy.
Assists the MCO Navigator in transitioning families and creating/running enriching and integrative activities for the SRB population.
Supports summer programming, including chaperoning and transportation.
Participates in SPARK and other summer programming opportunities.
Manages and organizes resources, including maintaining the resource closet.
Compensation & Schedule:
$20 per hour
Limited part-time hours according to available grant funds
20-30 hours per week in the summer, hours vary during the school year.
Flexible schedule based on student needs and mentor’s availability
The program continues through the summer months into the following school year
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Be at least 18 years old
Be willing to adhere to all OASD policies and procedures
Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff
Document and submit activity information
Ability to respect the confidentiality of families and staff
Strong organizational skills
Experience working with staff and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences
