Job Title: Systems Administrator
Job Summary:
The Systems Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, security, and improvement of the systems and platforms that support a mission-critical Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Research & Education Network (REN) environment. This role supports both internal infrastructure and member-facing services used by higher education, K–12, healthcare, research institutions, government entities, and community anchor organizations.
This is a hybrid role spanning infrastructure, cybersecurity, and AI-enabled operations. In addition to core responsibilities, the Systems Administrator is expected to help strengthen the organization’s cybersecurity posture, improve operational resilience, and leverage automation and AI-driven tools to enhance monitoring, incident response, service delivery, and overall operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
System Maintenance & Administration
· Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server environments and enterprise Microsoft applications across hybrid infrastructure.
· Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure uptime, efficiency, and service continuity.
· Apply patches, updates, and security fixes across both on-premises and cloud-hosted systems utilizing
Action1 RMM.
· Administer and maintain the existing VMware vSphere/vCenter virtualization environment during the active cloud migration period. This infrastructure includes Windows and Linux servers.
Microsoft 365 & Cloud Administration
· Administer the full Microsoft 365 ecosystem, including:
o Microsoft Copilot: deployment, configuration, licensing, and user enablement and training
o SharePoint Online: site architecture, governance, content management, and permissions
o Microsoft Teams: collaboration policies, channel governance, and meeting configurations
o Exchange Online: mailbox management, mail flow, and compliance settings
· Implement and manage Microsoft Purview, including:
o Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies
o Sensitivity labels and Information Protection
o Compliance and retention policy management
o Audit and eDiscovery capabilities
· Manage Microsoft Intune for device compliance and endpoint management for Windows and MacOS devices.
Identity, Security & Compliance
· Administer Microsoft Entra ID, including:
o User and group lifecycle management
o Conditional Access policies and MFA enforcement using Cisco Duo MFA.
o Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Privileged Identity Management (PIM)
· Implement and enforce security protocols aligned with applicable compliance frameworks (e.g. NIST, CIS Controls).
· Perform regular system audits, compliance checks, and security assessments within the Microsoft environment.
Cloud Migration (Azure / Entra)
· Assist in planning and executing the migration of on-premises services to Microsoft Azure, including:
o Workload assessments and readiness evaluations
o Lift-and-shift and service modernization strategies
o Resource provisioning (Azure VMs, storage, networking, and monitoring)
· Collaborate with leadership to define and execute a phased migration roadmap.
User Support & Troubleshooting
· Provide technical support to end users, resolving hardware and software issues.
· Install, configure, and maintain desktops, laptops, and peripherals as needed utilizing Microsoft Intune.
· Develop documentation and training materials for IT procedures, Microsoft 365 usage, and security best practices.
· Support network connectivity troubleshooting including VPN, Wi-Fi, and LAN, particularly as it relates to hybrid cloud connectivity.
Backup & Disaster Recovery
· Maintain backup and disaster recovery strategies for both on-premises and cloud-hosted workloads.
· Ensure data integrity and availability in case of system failures.
Requirements:
· Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
· Experience: 3 years of experience in systems administration or IT support.
· Technical Skills:
o Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID.
o Experience with Microsoft Purview or equivalent compliance/data governance tools.
o Understanding of Microsoft Copilot or equivalent AI platforms for implementation, training and guidance.
o Proficiency in Intune administration: Autopilot provisioning, application setup and Windows Autopatch
o Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID: identity management, Conditional Access, and SSO.
o Familiarity with PowerShell for automation and administrative scripting.
o Understanding networking fundamentals: firewalls, VPN, LAN, DNS, and DHCP.
Optional Qualifications:
· Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics management or equivalent CRM tools.
· Experience with Microsoft SharePoint Online or equivalent Intranet platforms.
· Certifications (Preferred but not required):
o CompTIA Network
o CompTIA Security
o Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
o Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert (MS-102)
o Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals (SC-900)
Or equivalent certifications
· Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities. Comfortable balancing day-to-day operational support alongside long-term migration and modernization projects.
Work Environment:
· Hybrid/On-site/Remote options available.
· May require occasional after-hours work for security incidents or maintenance.
· On-call duty – One week every two months.
