Field Service Controls Technician

Position Summary:
The Field Service Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial automation and control systems at customer sites. This role requires a strong understanding of PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, mechanical functions, and electrical control systems. The technician will work independently or as part of a team to ensure systems operate efficiently and meet performance standards. The position involves regular travel to customer locations, often with short notice, and requires strong problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills.
Essential Functions:
• Perform field service repairs, installations, field audits, for new equipment installations and / or existing machine installed base.
• When assigned, train customers, managers, technical personnel, and operators on proper operation, maintenance, and safety rules of filling/packaging equipment, specifically on applicable machinery control software.
• Occasionally, when assigned, provide accountability as a site manager/lead, directing the workload and tasks of other field technicians, assembly and engineering personnel, and coordinating with customer and other contract / OEM site personnel.
• Maintain necessary machine configuration documentation during installation.
• Possess and sustain proficiency in control software (e.g. Allen Bradley/Rockwell Automation and other controls platforms) and machinery equipped with PLC’s through vendor training and interaction with engineering personnel.
• Provide support to customers, internal Customer Service, Assembly, and Sales departments, as required.
• Provide updates and modifications, as needed, to machine controls software programs or firmware at customer sites.
• Provide feedback to Head of Service on customer equipment needs and updates/mods.
• Report customer and individual concerns/complaints to Quality Manager, as needed.
• Support and assist with design and order reviews, assembly, testing and final acceptance tests (SAT and FAT) to become proficient with the control packages interface and integration.
• Assist the Parts and Modernization departments with quoting requests for electronic controls software and hardware upgrades and / or electrical component upgrades.
• Process detailed expense and service trip reports on all service visits, in a timely fashion.
• Submit to safety, background, and drug/alcohol testing as required by customer(s).
• Properly and appropriately don personal protective equipment.
• Contribute to product safety by reviewing machine functionality and safety standards when on customer site.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training and/or practical experience.
• 3 years of experience in documentation, technical writing, or a related area.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Proficiency with documentation tools and video editing software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe (or similar), SharePoint, GIMP).
• Proficiency with camera/photo and video taking and editing.
• Familiarity with content management systems and version control practices.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
• Basic understanding of technical concepts relevant to the industry (manufacturing and engineering).
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with graphics or multimedia tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Snagit).
• Knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., ISO, FDA, 3A).
• ERP knowledge (Infor Visual MFG a plus)
