General Description Of Duties

NOTE TO INTERNAL APPLICANTS: INTERNAL CANDIDATES IN THE SAME CLASSIFICATION AND/OR PAYGRADE AS THE POSITION POSTED WILL NOT RECEIVE A PAY ADJUSTMENT IF SELECTED.

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled work involving the maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of gasoline or diesel-driven motors and related small engine vehicles, equipment, machinery, trailers, and tools. Employee functions at the journeyman level to perform moderately complex work with independence. Position contributes to efficient and effective division operations and is responsible for maintaining accurate records of maintenance and repairs, as well as, maintaining various inventory records.

  • Performs diagnostic tests on malfunctioning and/or broken-down small engine vehicles and equipment to determine appropriate repairs and/or maintenance.
  • Performs moderate to complex preventive maintenance, overhaul, and repair services of small engine vehicles, equipment, and trailers.
  • Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work pertaining to the service and repair of small engine vehicle and equipment. e.g., hydraulic controls, air compressors, pumps and related equipment, fuel and exhaust systems, ignitions systems, electrical and brake components, transmissions, internal and external engine parts; changes oil, air filters, fuel filters, fan belts, radiator hoses, and sparkplugs; inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary parts; tunes and adjusts engines.
  • Performs off-site service to small engine vehicles and equipment when deemed necessary.
  • Overhauls and rebuilds small engines, alternators, starters, and other components related to small engine vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains and calibrates shop tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Completes service work orders to document parts and labor used in service and repair activities.
  • Road tests and/or tests the operation of vehicles and equipment upon completion of repairs to ensure the proper functioning and safe operating condition.
  • Operates a wide variety of hand and power driver tools and equipment, e.g., sockets and wrenches, drivers, grinders, drill presses, lathes, testing equipment, and welding equipment.
  • Ensures the safe and proper operation of tools and power equipment; adheres to prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists as necessary in Heavy Equipment Shop or in other Shop operations when deemed necessary.
  • Performs duties as assigned and/or as deemed necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:Two (2) years of responsible experience in small engine/ equipment repair and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Miscellaneous: Must possess and maintain a Valid Florida Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to understand, follow and direct written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and write English; ability to read and understand service and maintenance manuals.
  • Considerable knowledge of the assembly, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of general and specialized gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, e.g., automobiles, trailers, tractors, lawn mowers and equipment, chainsaws, and many other types of specialized small engine equipment.
  • Skill in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing routine to moderately complex mechanic problems of gasoline and diesel engine powered equipment.
  • Skill in operating various automotive style repair tools and diagnostic equipment, e.g., drill press, grinder, hydraulic press, battery charger, gauges, meters, micrometers, hand tools, etc.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles, light and heavy trucks, mechanical equipment, and other gasoline and diesel-driven motors, e.g., service trucks, forklifts, back hoes, tractors, lawn maintenance equipment, golf carts, etc.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 – 100 pounds).
  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals.

Physical Demand Class: Heavy

  • Physical agility is required in climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and crawling.
  • 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
  • Physical agility is required in climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and crawling.
