Position Title: Theatre Tech Assistant

 

Pay Grade: Hourly                                          Period of Employment: 12 months

 

Description Approved/Revised: FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Theatre Teacher

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Set Construction: Assist in building platforming, flats, and structural scenery using
  • various materials (wood, metal, fabric).
  • Scenic Painting: Execute base coats, textures, and detail painting for sets as directed by the production design.
  • Prop Coordination: Design, source, or "build from scratch" hand props and furniture pieces specific to the era and style of each show.
  • Shop Stewardship: Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient scene shop. Ensure all tools are handled correctly and returned to their proper places.
  • Technical Support: Assist with "Load-In" (moving scenery into the theatre) and "Strike" (the dismantling and storage of the set after the final performance).

  • The Theatre Tech Assistant will work with Theatre Teacher to help design and build sets, props, and other technical aspects of plays and shows throughout the school year.
  • The Theatre Tech Assistant will also be potentially available to assist with technical requirements of community groups using the Osbourn High School auditorium (specifically but not limited to the light booth and sound board).

 

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Serve as a role model.
  • Basic understanding of working in a theatre environment as part of a production team.
  • Technical Skill: Functional knowledge of basic hand and power tools (drills, saws, sanders) and painting techniques.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Ability to take creative direction well while offering practical
  • solutions to technical challenges.
  • Safety Conscious: A "safety first" mindset regarding power tools, ladders, and heavy lifting.
  • Dependability: Consistent attendance during the high-intensity weeks leading up to a production (Tech Week).

 

 Requisite Education and Experience:

  • High School Degree or equivalent, experience working with hand and power tools (OSHA Certification is a plus but not required).

Physical Requirements:

 

     Must be comfortable standing for long periods, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 40 lbs.

 

     Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
