The Lead Mechanical Engineer provides engineering support for INDUSTRY LEADING, PREMIER industrial CLUTCH and BRAKE solutions to the mechanical industries, including: METAL FORMING (PRESS), MARINE PROPULSION, WINCH, and AGRICULTURAL.
Compensation Data: Exempt salary, based on experience.
Location: Solon, Ohio – 100% onsite
Travel: Approximately 20% including Mexico, required
Schedule: M-F, Hours can vary
Key Responsibilities:
Product Application Engineering & Operational Support
· Machine Design of press crankshaft end components – adapting Ortlinghaus clutch/brakes with bearings, flywheels, spacers, etc., to create a “kit”. Occasional design of assembly fixtures, misc.
· Technical Support to Orttech clutch and brake mechanic for inspections/repairs/rebuilds.
· Oversee internal Quality/Inspection of purchased and fabricated parts and complete units.
· Interface with Hydraulic systems supplier in sizing HPU for Ortlinghaus hydraulic clutch/brakes.
· Special Engineering Projects: design of test fixtures/display stands/miscellaneous parts and assemblies.
Sales and Customer Application Support
· Technical Sales Support of Application Engineering and Field Sales.
· Effective COMMUNICATION SKILLS required with both customers and overseas counterparts.
Remote and In-Field Customer Support
· Interface with customers to answer technical questions/troubleshoot issues with Ortlinghaus clutch/brakes used on metal forming stamping presses.
· TRAVEL required for service & support (nonphysical labor) to metal stamping press facilities throughout North America several times a year for instrumentation and monitoring of customer equipment (clutch controls on stamping presses). Approximately 10-12 trips per year.
· Effective COMMUNICATION SKILLS required with both customers and overseas counterparts.
Level of Work:
· Experience in MECHANICAL DRIVES and understanding of POWER TRANSMISSION/TORQUE highly beneficial.
· Strong understanding of all aspects of mechanical engineering including the following:
o Mechanical power transmission components
o Hydraulic Power Units and components, valves, pumps
o Control schematics and components
o Electrical knowledge is helpful but not required.
o Trouble shooting
· Hands on engineer – small amount of “wrench twisting” required to oversee inspection/disassembly/repair of Ortlinghaus Industrial Clutches and Brakes
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
· Office time: sitting at a desk working on a computer/email/CAD/design tools/phone calls with customers. Requires moving about the office.
· Warehouse. Lifting is typically around 10 lbs., but on occasions there can be as much as 50 lbs.
· Outside work includes traveling to customer locations throughout North America, typically the USA but occasionally Mexico, to
o Connect monitoring/DAQ equipment to hydraulic/electronic press controls and to adjust and fine tune functions of the hydraulic system.
o Standing, walking, climbing ladders and industrial spiral stairs, kneeling, and reaching during service tasks.
o Comfortable with heights of up to 50 feet, riding on manlifts, walking on the crown of metal stamping presses on surfaces that are often oily and/or dirty.
o Use of PPE (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, hearing protection) and adherence to site requirements.
· Occasional international travel required to Mexico for service/support
What you will need to succeed:
Education & Qualifications:
· Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical Engineering, required
· 5 years’ experience, Press Industry knowledge huge plus
Competencies:
· 2D/3D CAD proficient (AutoCAD/SolidWorks preferred)
· Mechanical/Technical aptitude – proven problem solving and hands on mechanical ability
· Experience in MECHANICAL DRIVES and understanding of POWER TRANSMISSION/TORQUE
· Excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Ability to establish and cultivate relationships with customers and colleagues.
· Ability to work independently and comfortable making decisions within communicated parameters.
· Ability to evaluate alternatives and make appropriate judgements within established guidelines.
· Willingness to get “hands dirty” and troubleshoot problems/issues
· Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to multi-task.
