Medical Assistant

POSITION: Medical Assistant

RESPONSIBLE TO: Clinic Supervisor and/or Administrator/OAW Physicians

JOB SUMMARY: Prepares patients to see the physicians, facilitates paperwork as needed, and assists the clinical staff person with clinical duties as directed.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school degree required
  • CMA certificate desirable
  • Training in orthopaedic assisting a plus

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least one year of experience in clinical assisting
  • Basic Understanding of Anatomy
  • Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications
  • Knowledge of practice management and word processing software
  • Working knowledge of an EMR
  • Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Neat, professional appearance

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Clinical Support

  • Greets patient and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patients for exam or treatment
  • Prepares patients for exam or treatment by taking a history, height/weight, and blood pressure, then recording the information in the patient's chart
  • Puts charts up for physicians when patient is ready in exam room, or has patient file open in an EMR
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments
  • Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor procedures
  • Assists in pre-certifying surgical and other procedures when necessary
  • Schedules tests and off site procedures when necessary
  • Communicates physician referral requests to referral staff for processing
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization
  • Reviews charts at least 48 hours in advance of scheduled appointment to ensure lab results, x-rays, and MRI/CT results have been received; calls testing facility if results have not been received
  • Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines
  • Performs patient education when appropriate
  • Replenishes supplies—stocks and cleans exam rooms
  • Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to ordering staff, may assist in ordering of medical supplies, unpacking, labeling and stocking of supplies.
  • Ensures that laboratory samples are picked up by the reference laboratory daily
  • Directs lab results and other results or notes to physician for review and treatment plan

Casting Services and Area

  • Escorts patients to casting area, and prepares them for application
  • Applies and removes casts, splints, and dressings, as directed by physician
  • Educates patients about cast care and follow up instructions
  • Recommends equipment and inventory purchases to Administrator.

Other Duties

  • Maintains communication among the physician, patient, and clinical/business team
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations
  • Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines established by the practice
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of EMR and other computer software as it relates to job functions
  • Maintains CPR certification and Annual Computer Based Training programs
  • Attends all regular staff meetings
  • Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the Manager or physicians

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Physical Demands

Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing, sitting and walking. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will work under stressful conditions, and work irregular hours. Employee will be exposed to bodily fluids on a regular basis.

Typical Working Condition

Employee may have exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, x-ray radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
