Pre-Operative Care
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing outpatient orthopedic procedures. This role supports pre-operative assessment, intra-operative coordination, and post-anesthesia recovery, ensuring exceptional patient experience, clinical quality, and regulatory compliance in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Responsibilities
Pre-Operative Care
- Perform pre-operative patient assessments, including medical history, medication reconciliation, and surgical readiness
- Prepare patients for surgery, including IV initiation, pre-op medications, patient education, and verification of surgical consents
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and perioperative staff to ensure efficient case flow
- Assist with room turnover and case preparation in accordance with sterile technique and infection-prevention standards
- Support anesthesia and surgical teams as needed to ensure patient safety and procedural efficiency
- Adhere to time-out procedures and Universal Protocol standards
- Monitor patients during recovery from anesthesia, assessing vital signs, pain levels, neurovascular status, and surgical sites
- Administer medications and interventions per orders and ASC protocols
- Recognize and respond promptly to post-operative complications or changes in patient condition
- Provide discharge education and instructions to patients and caregivers
- Accurately document all patient care, assessments, medications, and interventions in the electronic health record (EHR)
- Ensure compliance with ASC policies, CMS Conditions for Coverage, AAAHC/Joint Commission standards, and state regulations
- Participate in chart audits, quality reviews, and regulatory surveys
- Promote a culture of safety, efficiency, and patient-centered care
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection-control practices, and performance metrics
- Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical techs, and administrative staff
- Current unrestricted NYS RN License;
- BLS required;
- ACLS/PALS preferred;
- Minimum one year as an OR nurse, two or more years preferred with scrub and circulating experience;
- Minimum of 2 years previous PACU or critical care experience required;
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
