Job Purpose:
The OR Charge Nurse is responsible for the overall care of patients in the operating room, including ensuring the patient receives the utmost safest care and assisting the surgeons and anesthesiologist in performing surgeries. The OR Charge Nurse plans, coordinates, and evaluates daily surgical activities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
● Responsible for the coordination and supervision of nursing staff, surgical technologists, sterile processing techs and patient care assistants including but not limited to work schedules, daily coordinating of staffing assignments, and daily patient care activities to assure an efficient and safe delivery of care
● Supervises the day to day clinical aspect, troubleshooting problem areas within the daily functions of patient care under the direction of the nurse manager and/or medical director
● Assists the nurse manager in providing direction to staff to facilitate daily patient flow, communication and problem resolution with staff and physicians
● Assists quality, risk, safety, and infection control in collections of data for qualified consulting committee
● Assists the nurse manager with the creation and implementation of policies and procedures
● Assists the nurse manager with feedback for yearly evaluations/competencies for staff, staff scheduling, staff counseling, staff evaluation, staff development and in any performance management actions
● Assists nurse manager with staff meetings outlining goals and process improvement initiatives
● Ensures staff compliance with surgery center policies and procedures and maintains nursing standards
● Assists with staff orientation and training
● Assists with inventory counts and inventory management
● Prepares the operating room for surgery, ensuring that proper equipment and supplies are ready and available using aseptic technique during setup while opening all sterile packs and supplies; prepares any medications necessary for the surgery
● Prepares patients for surgery including reviewing medical history, verifying proper consent, assessing the patient and verifying correct patient and surgical site, and educating patient on surgery expectations
● Receives reports from pre-operative nurse and transports patients to operating room
● Assists anesthesia with intubation, assists with proper positioning of the patient, and provides the surgeon and/or anesthesia with any additional supplies necessary for the surgery
● Prepares for the end of surgery, assists anesthesia with extubation, and transfers patient to PACU
● Cleans operating room after surgery, including disposing biohazards and supplies; prepares the room for the next surgery
● Provides clear and accurate documentation throughout the surgical case
● Ensures prescribed medications are administered and documented appropriately
● Ensure specimens obtained during surgery are labeled correctly and placed in appropriate bins
● Assists in restocking the operating room and anesthesia carts; completes proper supply count for each surgery

o Infection Control/OSHA
o Annual TB Testing
o Fire Safety
o All codes
o Locate MSDS

Education and Experience Requirements:
● Associate’s degree or equivalent in Nursing from a two-year college or technical school
● Current and unrestricted RN license for the state you will be practicing in (IL or WI)
● BLS certification required upon hire
● PALS and ACLS certification required within 3 months of hire
● A minimum of three years of experience nursing experience in an OR, CNOR preferred
● Basic working knowledge of Microsoft and Google suites
● Basic working knowledge of EMR systems
● Knowledge of nursing standards and practice required
● Basic knowledge of related accreditation and certifications preferred
Environmental/Working Conditions:
Working environment is an ambulatory surgery center. Position may also be exposed to occupational hazards, blood borne pathogens, as communicable diseases and radiation. Consistent work hours outside of normal business hours including evenings and occasional weekends.
Physical/Mental Demands:
• Stand and walk for extended periods of time
• Requires lifting, carrying, or moving heavier objects (i.e. pushing or pulling up to 100 pounds and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
• Possess full range of motion in shoulders and arms, including reaching above or below the shoulder.
• Finger dexterity for typing on a keyboard and using a mouse for extended periods of time; ability to twist hands or wrists repetitively
• Good balance
• Vision (e.g., depth perception, color vision, strong vision up close); hearing (e.g., high pitch sounds, soft or distant sounds)
